January: Pushing for access in Syria

Despite enormous challenges, OCHA and other humanitarian organizations continued to press for access in war-torn Syria, reaching an average of more than 5 million people in need each month in 2018. Syria continued to face protection and access challenges in areas such as Idlib, eastern Ghouta and southern Syria. More than 1.5 million people were newly displaced in 2018 as the crisis entered its eighth year.

Ce rapport présente les données collectées pendant le mois de décembre 2018 à Faya et Kalait, dans le nord du Tchad, qui ont été installés afin d’observer les mouvements des voyageurs en transit.

La moyenne des individus observés par jour est de 446 individus pendant le mois de décembre 2018, une légère diminution de 1% par rapport au mois de novembre 2018(450).

Homeless for seven years

Since 2011, Libya has experienced several waves of armed conflict, which have led to massive displacements of people. Over those seven years, like many other Libyans, the security of a home has eluded Hawa Ramadan and her family. Like many other Libyans, she has known several makeshift homes in many cities.

According to available data from national authorities and IOM offices, a total of 133,489 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe between January and November 2018, 25 per cent decrease compared to the 178,232 reported in the same period 2017. 30,951 migrants and refugees were registered on entry and exit in Bosnia and Herzegovina (23,271), Albania (3,280) and Montenegro (4,400) in 2018, fourteen times more than the 2,199 registered in the same period last year.

In northern Niger, two flow monitoring points have been activated since February 2016 in the city of Séguédine and Arlit, followed by the activation of new flow monitoring points in Dan Barto, Magaria and Tahoua in August 2018 and the point in Dan Issa in September 2018.

This report presents the data collected through the 6 flow monitoring points for the month of November 2018.

According to the available data from national authorities and IOM offices, a total of 122,947 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe between January and October 2018. Estimated 81 per cent of migrants and refugees arrived by sea (99,174). A total of 27,972 migrants and refugees were registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania since the beginning of 2018, thirteen times more than the 2,199 reported in the same period last year and a ten times increase compared to the 2,725 registered in the whole of 2017.

Transit/Reception centres were opened in Ušivak, in Hadžići, and in Bira, in Bihać, significantly increasing capacity in BiH by 960 spaces in October.

Restrictions on the freedom of movement to and within USC were placed on refugees and migrants in October. The UN in BiH is advocating to revoke this.

October saw a record number of arrivals to BiH: 5,057 refugees and migrants were detected by the Ministry of Security, compared to 3,710 in September.

Medicines supplies have suffered a major setback in Libya due to the persistent crisis, leading to endemic shortages. Achieving universal health coverage requires access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines. According to the SARA survey (2017) findings, there is a general low availability of essential medicines in hospitals (41%), and extremely low in PHC facilities (10%) and medical stores (13%).

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) strongly condemns the cowardly terrorist attack on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today, in Tripoli. It expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. UNSMIL reaffirms that attacks on state institutions constitutes an attack on all Libyans.
