WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced Thursday five new awards totaling more than $6 million to help protect and empower women in countries affected by crisis, conflict, and transition. Deputy Assistant Administrator Sarah Mendelson from USAID’s Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance announced the awards at a roundtable event where participants reflected on progress and next steps for USAID’s implementation of the U.S. National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (NAP).

At the request of the Government of Sierra Leone and in coordination with the Libyan authorities and the Sierra Leonean embassy, IOM has helped 35 Sierra Leonean migrants stranded in Libya to voluntarily return home from the south of the country.

IOM worked with a local NGO partner to bring the migrants to Tripoli from the southern city of Sabha. In Tripoli it provided arranged exit visas and arranged their travel home on a commercial flight.

The Security Council would hold 15 open meetings this month — including debates on the situations in Afghanistan, Haiti and Kosovo — the Russian Federation’s top United Nations delegate said today, as he briefed the press at Headquarters on the work programme as his country assumed the Council’s rotating presidency.

“We are focused on concrete and urgent topics of the current international agenda,” Vitaly Churkin said, adding that the Council would also hold 17 closed consultations.

  • Notwithstanding laudable successes, incomplete or poorly conceived disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) initiatives have been key factors to high rates of conflict relapse in Africa.

  • Reintegration is the most complex and critical yet least prioritized facet of DDR.

  • The decision to integrate former militias into the national army is typically a political expediency that impedes military professionalism and increases the likelihood of human rights abuses and instability.
