In April, almost 4,700 refugees and migrants entered Europe, primarily via Greece, Spain and Italy. Overall arrivals to Greece decreased compared with the previous month (2,887 versus 3,159), while arrivals to Spain (1,540 versus 1,000) increased by 55% and those to Italy remained consistent (273 versus 262). So far this year almost 20,600 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to over 30,900 that arrived in the same period last year, marking a 33% decrease.

In March, just over 4,500 refugees and migrants entered Europe, primarily via Italy, Greece and Spain. Overall arrivals to Spain decreased by just over 26% compared with the previous month (1,006 versus 1,366) while arrivals through routes to Greece (3,159 versus 2,316) and Italy (262 versus 60) increase compared with the previous month. So far this year some 15,900 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to over 19,200 that arrived in the same period last year, marking a 17% decrease.

In February, just over 3,600 refugees and migrants entered Europe via Italy, Greece and Spain. Overall arrivals to Spain (1,366 versus 4,612) decreased by just over 70% compared with the previous month while arrivals through routes to Greece (2,316 versus 2,652) and Italy (60 versus 202) decreased compared with the previous month. So far this year some 8,700 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe by sea compared to nearly 10,700 that arrived in the same period last year, marking an 18% decrease.

ARRIVAL TRENDS AND FIGURES

Between 1 January and 30 November, 131,100 refugees and migrants reached Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to almost 171,430 arrivals in the same period in 2017. This marks a 25% reduction from the previous year’s arrival figures, showing a continued declining trend of the overall arrivals numbers to Europe. After a spike in October, arrivals dropped in November with over 10,080 people reaching Europe.

A few days ago, we celebrated the centenary year of Nelson Mandela’s birth. We spoke of his example; his fortitude, his suffering and compassion, while recalling also the declaration that he and my predecessor Mary Robinson signed in 2000 on diversity and tolerance.

Between 1 and 31 January 2018, over 8,000 people arrived via the Mediterranean to Europe, an 11% increase compared to the same month in 2017 during which over 7,200 arrived. Arrivals duing January comprised of 19% children, 13% women and 68% men.

As from April 2015, the number of refugees and forced migrants making the dangerous voyage to Europe by boat increased. The majority landed in Greece. They were people on the move, hastily travelling through the Balkan countries, mostly aiming to reach Germany or Sweden. Staff of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Europe, together with volunteers and other NGOs, helped the refugees along their journey, for the few hours they stopped at a border, in a shelter, or in a transit camp. Funding agencies offered valuable help to support the services offered.

Terrorist groups continued to exploit an absence of credible and effective state institutions, where avenues for free and peaceful expression of opinion were blocked, justice systems lacked credibility, and where security force abuses and government corruption went unchecked.

Trends on sea arrivals

So far this year, 203,981 people made the journey to seek safety in Europe. Almost three-quarters of these had travelled from Turkey to Greece prior to the end of March. Since March arrivals in the eastern Mediterranean route have decreased by 95.32%. In May 1,465 of people arrived to Greece by sea this is 40.13% less than in the previous month (3,650 arrivals).

31 May 2016 description

Arrivals and Departures: In Italy, on 26 May, 10 Syrian refugees (2 family groups) arrived in Rome from Turkey as part of the resettlement scheme under the EUTurkey Agreement. Another family of four scheduled to travel to Italy did not receive medical clearance by IOM just before departure as one of the children is suffering from heart issues.
