  • As of 30 December 2016, the inter-agency coordinated appeals and refugee response plans within the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) require US$22.1 billion -- an increase of 10 per cent since it was first launched twelve months ago -- to meet the needs of 96.2 million humanitarian crisis-affected people in 40 countries. By the end of 2016, $12.6 billion were raised towards the coordinated appeals -- more than ever before. Despite immense donor generosity, it is only 57 percent of the requirements committed, leaving a short fall of $9.5 billion.

It’s been a tumultuous year: shock election results, the Brexit referendum, a nervy global economy, and a raft of extremist attacks – all of which have had impacts on migratory movements and the way countries have responded to them.

There is no sure way of predicting where the next refugee crisis will come from, but some strong policy trends have emerged. And what is striking is how similar those policies are becoming, despite widely varying contexts.

La plupart d’entre eux étaient clairement visés. C’est une sinistre chasse aux journalistes que Reporters sans frontières (RSF) déplore en 2016. Throughout the year, natural hazards, conflict and protracted crises have placed a particularly heavy burden on the poor, who are often extremely vulnerable to shocks. Across 22-affected areas, 70-million people are currently in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 3 or above.

Switzerland - IOM reports that 352,471 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 7 December, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy, compared with 933,670 through the first week of December, 2015.

Some 176,678 people have arrived by sea in Italy in 2016 – more than in either 2014 or 2015. Some 172,681 migrants and refugees arrived by sea in Greece during the same period, far fewer than in 2015.

  • More than 173,500 migrants have reached Italy so far in 2016, around 29,000 more than in the same period last year. While migrant flows are expected to continue, the rate is likely to fall in winter.

  • The estimated number of deaths on the Central Mediterranean route has grown disproportionately, to over 4,200 people this year compared to less than 2,900 at the same point in 2015. It is unknown how many people die on their journey though Africa

Ongoing conflicts continue to intensify food insecurity

Global agricultural prospects are improving but lean seasons loom in near future

8 December 2016, Rome - Civil conflict and weather-related shocks have severely stressed food security in 2016, increasing the number of countries in need of food assistance, according to a FAO report. The new edition of the Crop Prospects and Food Situation report, released today, highlights 39 countries that are in need of external assistance for food.

On 1 November, IOM assisted 167 stranded Nigerien migrants, including 48 women, 40 children and 79 men, to return home to Niger from southern Libya.

The Community Stabilization Programme brought the Southern Heritage Festival for Peace to Twaiwa Village on 15 November.

IOM has offered two mobile-phones for the 32 women who escaped from the Islamic State in Sirte, with more interventions planned.

IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has released its fourth Flow Monitoring Analytical report.
