In August 2019, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) recorded 3,147 deaths and injuries from 342 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 64% (2,029) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

When explosive violence was used in populated areas, 87% of all casualties were civilians, compared to 17% in other areas.

The Global Humanitarian Overview published on 4 December announced funding requirements of $21.9 billion for 21 Humanitarian Response Plans (HRP) and the Venezuela Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan. By the end of August, requirements had reached $26.57 billion. The change in requirements since last month is mainly due to an increase in requirements for Mali and Zimbabwe, and the publication of the HRP for Venezuela.

Speaking at a Headquarters press conference, he said those signature events will be held during the high-level week of the General Assembly and presided over by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Geneva – IOM reports that 46,521 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea through 28 August, roughly a 32 per cent decrease from the 68,029 arriving during the same period last year.

Arrivals this year to Greece and Spain are at 23,193 and 14,969, respectively (38,162 combined), accounting for 82 per cent of the regional total, with the balance arriving in much smaller numbers to Italy, Malta and Cyprus. Arrivals to Greece are running approximately 23 per cent ahead of 2018’s totals from this time. Arrivals to Spain are almost 50 per cent lower.

As attacks on Idlib intensify, 400,000 civilians are displaced

The military offensive by the Syrian government and their Russian allies continues against Idlib, the last opposition-held province in Syria. Over this past weekend government troops surrounded the town of Khan Shaykhun – the site of a notorious chemical weapons attack in April 2017 – forcing fighters from the armed extremist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to retreat and thousands of civilians to flee. Khan Shaykhun has been outside of government control since 2014.
