The EU – via the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis - adopted a €100 million new assistance package to support the resilience of refugees, internally displaced person (IDP) host communities in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. This will be done through the strengthening of public service delivery systems, improved access to higher education, and improved child protection services.

From 12-14 March 2019 the European Union and the United Nations co-chaired the Brussels III Conference.

As well as renewing support to a lasting political solution to end the Syria crisis, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, the Conference addressed the most critical humanitarian and resilience issues affecting Syrians inside their country and refugees and their host communities in particular in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

Supporting the future of Syria and the region: EU exceeds aid pledged in 2018

The European Union institutions and member states contributed close to 60% more than their original pledges at last year's Brussels Conference on "Supporting the future of Syria and the region", an EU report published today showed. The international community exceeded its pledge by almost 40%. A Third Brussels Conference will take place next week from 12-14 March.

Today, on World Refugee Day, the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis has approved new projects to support refugees and local communities in Lebanon and Jordan.

The new projects include the public schooling of refugee children in Lebanon and social assistance for vulnerable refugees and local communities affected by the Syrian crisis in Lebanon and Jordan. The new aid package brings the overall value of projects under the Trust Fund to over €1.4 billion.

Education in emergencies helps millions of children in need across the world.

The Commission has adopted a new policy framework today that aims to increase humanitarian funding for education in emergencies and crises to 10% of its overall humanitarian aid budget as of 2019. The policy also aims to bring children caught up in humanitarian crises back to learning within 3 months.

Ahead of the second Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, the European Union ran an online consultation in February 2018 to seek the views of organisations working in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. The consultation sought partners' views on potential themes for the conference, key challenges, lessons learned and best practice, and included a separate question on social cohesion between refugee and host communities. 108 responses to the consultation were received.
