Introduction

Overview

During 2017, almost 38,900 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement1 to 25 countries in Europe,2 36% more than during 2016 and over three times greater than the average rate of 12,400 submissions per year during the last decade.
Between 2007 and 2016, Europe’s proportion of resettlement sub-missions globally has increased from approximately 9% to more than 18%, and in 2017 reached 52%. This is primarily due to a significant decrease globally in new submissions for resettlement, most notably to the United States of America.

  • In central Africa, a new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case was reported in Equatorial Guinea. In total, three cases have now been reported from the country; genetic sequencing indicates the cases are linked to an ongoing WPV1 outbreak in Cameroon. Outbreak response in the country is currently being planned.

21 MARCH 2014 - Polio outbreak response in the Middle East is continuing to urgently stop an outbreak affecting the region.

As of 20 March 2014, in the Syrian Arab Republic a total of 37 WPV1 cases have been reported: 25 cases by the Syrian Arab Republic Ministry of Health, and 12 cases from contested areas (Aleppo, Edleb and Deir Al Zour) not yet reflected in official figures. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 17 December 2013, from Edleb.

Situation overview:

  1. Consolidated and Flash appeals in the MENA region received US$1.1 billion.
    The largest recipient was Yemen, with US$342 million, followed by oPt with US$286 million.
    In total, the appeals are 49% funded with a short fall of 51%.
  2. The Syrian Humanitarian Response Plan (SHARP) and the Syria Regional Response Plan (RRP) jointly received US$525 million, which left a total shortfall of US$311 million in 2012.

The European Commission announced today the launching of a new civil protection programme in the Mediterranean region, building on the achievements of the successful Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme for the Prevention, Preparedness and Response to natural and man-made disasters (PPRD).

The new programme will start in the spring of 2013 and will run until 2016. It was announced at a high-level conference in Brussels which marked the completion of the current PPRD programme.

  • The requirements for the Syria Regional Response Plan have been revised to US$488 million. The plan includes Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq and is currently 29% funded.
