The Director-General of the Monegasque Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ms. Isabelle Rosabrunetto visited Burj Barajneh Camp in Beirut, Lebanon accompanied by the Deputy Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, Ms. Daniela Leinen. The Government of Monaco increased its contribution to UNRWA in 2019, granting an additional EUR 100,000 to the current partnership. This contribution will support the MHF in Lebanon and will target beneficiaries distributed in all areas across Lebanon.

Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Monaco, his Excellency Gilles Tonelli, visited Beddawi camp in north Lebanon accompanied by the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, Claudio Cordone.
During the visit, Monaco announced a new contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in support of the Agency’s Medical Hardship Fund (MHF).
During 2017, almost 38,900 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement1 to 25 countries in Europe,2 36% more than during 2016 and over three times greater than the average rate of 12,400 submissions per year during the last decade.
Between 2007 and 2016, Europe’s proportion of resettlement sub-missions globally has increased from approximately 9% to more than 18%, and in 2017 reached 52%. This is primarily due to a significant decrease globally in new submissions for resettlement, most notably to the United States of America.
Between 1 January and 31 July 2017, 25,556 refugees were submitted by UNHCR for resettlement to 22 countries in Europe, only 11% less than the total for 2016 and already 130% more than the average rate of 11,100 submissions per year during the last decade.
On 9 November, Programme Coordinator Emilie Silvestre and Programme Officer Laetitia Vecchierini from the Government of the Principality of Monaco visited the UNRWA Lebanon Field Office to see first-hand the implementation and achievements of Monaco-funded projects.
The exercise organized on 27 and 28 November to evaluate the functioning of the Tsunami Warning System for the North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adjacent Seas has taken place as scheduled. This real-time simulation, based on four scenarios in which earthquakes provoked tsunamis in different regions, demonstrated that the communication system for sending and receiving alert messages to concerned national authorities, worked smoothly.
A simulated tsunami will strike the western and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic shoreline on 27 and 28 November, to test the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System for the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. The exercise, named NEAMWave12, is organized under the umbrella of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
