Measles situation in EMR

In the first 3 months of 2019, a total of 5 647 cases of measles has been reported from 19 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). The most affected countries this year include Somalia (1 204), Sudan (1 168), Saudi Arabia (808), Pakistan (751), Tunisia (659) and Lebanon (568).

(New York: 17 July 2007): From getting medical treatment, building material and food to Afghan refugees to providing helicopters for distributing food in Sudan, the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has given almost $201 million for life-saving aid activities in the first half of 2007. The largest amounts of rapid response funding from the CERF during this period went to Mozambique ($11.2 million), Guinea ($9.8 million) and Chad ($7.2 million).

The Cluster Approach: Strengthening humanitarian response capacity by enhancing leadership, accountability and predictability.

Overview: The Cluster Approach is currently being implemented in Uganda, Somalia, DRC and Liberia (IASC agreed roll-out countries). It was also used in Pakistan, Lebanon and Yogjakarta, Indonesia. It is now also being introduced in other countries such as Cote d'Ivoire.

Policy: An IASC Preliminary Guidance Note on Implementation of the Cluster Leadership Approach was sent to the field in June 2006.
