School Rehabilitation

School Repair in Baalbek

Mercy Corps began Phase II repairs at seven public schools in Baalbek.1 Phase II works at the seven schools are focused on waterproofing and bathroom rehabilitation. These repairs will benefit a total of 2382 students and staff.

Following is a sampling of progress on Phase II school repair:

- Phase II repairs at the Orphanage of the Islamic Welfare Association in Baalbek included repairing the toilets and showers on two floors of the building and preparing the terrace for waterproofing.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

On December 10, the USG Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) departed Lebanon following a 21-week deployment. The DART completed mission objectives to assess humanitarian needs, program emergency and early recovery assistance, and coordinate the USG humanitarian response to the crisis in Lebanon.

The management of the UAE Program announced that it had expanded its existing Action Plan for the reconstruction, maintenance and rehabilitation of destroyed schools Lebanon, which included in the first stage schools in south Lebanon, to include new schools in the areas of the western Bekaa, the Shouf, Baabda and Aley, bringing the number of schools to 272.

The management of the UAE Program explained that it would be handing over 15 schools to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education at the end of the maintenance and restoration.

Over 200 million for Education in Emergency and Post Crisis Countries

GENEVA/THE HAGUE, 22 December 2006 - Millions of children in the developing world have a new ray of hope as the Dutch government today announced it has pledged $201 million to UNICEF to radically expand the agency's ongoing efforts to ensure that children in conflict, natural disasters and emerging from crisis can go to school.

It is the single largest earmarked donation UNICEF has received in its 60-year history.

More than 10,000 Lebanese students at vocational schools which were destroyed or damaged during the conflict in Lebanon last summer are now able to resume their education thanks to German support. The German government had made available 3 million euros for the repair of 34 vocational schools nationwide. The schools had suffered damage as a result of explosions and as temporary refugee shelters. At most schools, repair works are about to be completed.

U.S. Government Grants Target Most War-Ravaged and Marginalized Areas with Aid for Villages, Schools, Farms, and Small Businesses

Beirut (IOCC) - International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) has received two grants from the United States Government to significantly expand its ongoing work to help Lebanon recover from the war. A grant of $3.46 million has been awarded to IOCC by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the repair and development of 154 public schools in southern Lebanon, the Beqaa valley, and Mount Lebanon.

Executive Summary

This report presents overall findings from a review of the OCHA and UN system wide response in Lebanon between July-October 2006. The aim of the lesson learning review was twofold;

- to review the appropriateness and timeliness of the response and understand what worked well and why

- provide a platform to discuss key issues relevant for OCHA, for action and follow up.

Both primary and secondary information have been used and more than 25 key informant interviews were carried out with stakeholders external to OCHA.

1. Roads and bridges

According to the sources of the Council of Development and Reconstruction, the number of destroyed bridges, in whole or in part, on the international and side roads is 95 bridges. 70 of those bridges were adopted for reconstruction, two of which were completely accomplished until now (details in annex No. 1 – schedule No. 1). In addition, the number of destroyed roads is 151 roads throughout the Lebanese territories.

Beirut - The UAE Initiative for Support and Reconstruction of Lebanon yesterday delivered 52 renovated schools to the Lebanese ministry of education, a UAE official has announced. Mohammed Al Rumaithy, Director General of the project, said yesterday's delivery took to 233 the total number of schools rebuilt and renovated in the south of Lebanon by the UAE. 'We have decided to raise the ceiling of renovation targeted schools to 257,' he added.

SCHOOL REPAIR AND REHABILITATION

Baalbek-Mercy Corps completed Phase I basic rehabilitation activities at ten public schools in Baalbek. Mercy Corps is preparing to tender for Phase II structural rehabilitation works, to include waterproofing, bathroom rehabilitation and playground repair.

Southern Lebanon-Mercy Corps contracted additional rehabilitation works for Zauter Charqiye, Braiqaa, Qsaibe, Kfar Roumane Primary Schools and Qsaibe Secondary School.

The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), announced it will increase funding for three programs supporting early recovery and reconstruction in Lebanon.

USAID has provided:

  • $2.2 million to American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) organization to expand its existing USAID-funded food security, agriculture and livelihoods program.

In the first Arab initiative of its kind to the Ein el-Hilweh camp, targeted by the Israelis last July, the UAE Program to Support & Rebuild Lebanon has begun work on the reconstruction and building of the Al Rawda Educational Complex part of the camp. Destroyed by Israel during its aggression against Lebanon, the rebuilt complex will be named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The project was instigated during a visit a few days ago by a delegation from the UAE Program to the Ein El Hilweh camp.
