KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - Malaysia will send 360 peacekeepers to Lebanon, 200 troops as administrative staff and the remaining as patrol team, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said Wednesday.

The 200 Malaysian troops will assist the administrative workload at the United Nations (UN) Interim Force in Lebanon ( UNIFIL) headquarters in Lebanon, said Najib, who is also defense minister.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 20, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - The enhanced UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reached approximately 5,000 with the arrival of contingents from France, Italy and Spain, the UN said on Wednesday.

BEIRUT, Sept 18, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - The commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon French General Alain Pellegrini said Monday that his troops will not try to disarm Hezbollah which is a matter for the Lebanese government.

"The disarmament of Hezbollah is not the business of UNIFIL. This is a strictly Lebanese affair, which should be resolved at a national level," Pellegrini told reporters.

The UNIFIL chief clarified that the main task of the beefed-up UNIFIL was to ensure that south Lebanon could not be used as a base for attacks against Israel.

BEIRUT, Sept 15, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - Gunmen opened fired at a Lebanese army post near the border with Syria, leaving one soldier slightly wounded, Lebanon's official NNA news agency reported on Friday.

The shooting took place overnight in the Wadi Khaled area, about 1 km from the Lebanon-Syria border, following the army's detainment of several smugglers there, said NNA.

The shooting was the first such incident since Lebanese army troops deployed last month along the border to prevent weapon smuggling.

According to the report, carried by the Ha'aretz daily, after investigations into the air strike on July 26, the government presented a report to diplomats and military attaches from the observers' countries of origin -- China, Finland, Austria and Canada.
