With conditions improving in some parts of the country, Somali refugees continue to return from countries of asylum. Statistics from UNHCR indicate that over 121,000 people have voluntarily returned from ten countries of asylum since 2014. The countries include Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti,
Libya, Tunisia and Eritrea. As of August 2018, UNHCR registered 31,836 refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia.

Most people seeking asylum in Somalia are from Ethiopia and Yemen.

From the sky, the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County looks like a tuft of green hair in the balding savannah that is the northern part of Kenya.

Sporadic clouds throw black splotches that look like burn scars on the pale peach-hued earth. To the sympathetic eye, the camp looks like an oasis in the middle of the parched land that stretches to the Kenya-Somalia border where terrorism has interrupted the rhythm of life.

More than 28,553 cholera / AWD cases and 388 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.4%) have been reported in 10 out of 21 countries of Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) since the beginning of 2018. These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Somalia accounts for 21 % of the total case load reported this year.

The road leading to Hagadera in the Dadaab Refugee Complex is wide, straight and dusty.

Inside the camp, where tin and mud-walled houses are shielded from the wind by dry twig fences, the road narrows as it winds its way to the block E6 dispensary in the heart of the camp.

This is the first day of the round one vaccination campaign against polio in 12 high-risk counties, including Garissa.

The latest round targets children under five years, who will get the bivalent oral polio vaccine.

A woman from Muragara village, Tharaka-Nithi County, and her children, have been diagnosed with cholera-like symptoms, raising fears of the disease outbreak in the region.

Ms Elda Mukwanjeru and her three children, who were suffering from severe diarrhoea and vomiting, were on Thursday rushed to Chuka Consolata Mission Hospital.

Another child from the neighbourhood was also taken to the same facility on Friday night with similar symptoms.

This Revised Emergency Appeal seeks a total of some 9.2 million Swiss francs increased from 4.8 million Swiss francs, which reflects the overall operational plan of the Kenya Red Cross Society. The revised Appeal is focusing on shelter and settlement, health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene, protection, gender and inclusion as well as food security and livelihoods, targeting 321,630 people or 53,605 families. The operation has been scaled up to assist an increased number of people within an extended timeframe, and an enlarged geographic scope.
