The Narok County government has banned hawking of food in a bid to prevent the spread of a cholera outbreak that has killed two people with at least 54 admitted to the Narok County Referral Hospital in the past three days.

The ban will remain in force until the disease is contained.

On Friday 16 new cases were received at the hospital.

However, 21 were treated and discharged while 33 were admitted.

HARDEST HIT

The hardest hit areas include Narok town and Mosiro in Narok East.

From January to December 2018, approximately 37,565 cases and 443 cholera-related deaths were reported in the region with an average CFR of 1.2%. Starting on 4 January, accompanied by Dr Al Mandhari, RD/EMRO, Dr Tedros’ first trip will be to Kabul, Afghanistan and Islamabad, Pakistan to meet with Heads of State and polio teams to reinvigorate support for polio eradication.

This evaluation examines both the short- and long-term impacts of removing user fees for maternal health services in Kenya on low-income women’s maternal health facilities use. Though public facilities use increased, the gains in equity and use may be short-lived when user fees exemptions are not supplemented with alternative financing mechanisms for the facilities.

MSF sent an emergency team to the Kenyan side of the border to assist the wounded arriving from the Ethiopian town of Moyale, where violence erupted on 14 December.

The team is providing support to Takaba district hospital in Mandera county, which received more than 100 wounded in the three days from 14 to 16 December.

MSF emergency coordinator Abubakar Mohamed, who has worked for MSF in emergencies for more than 20 years, describes the situation.
