Foreword

As the Burundi refugee crisis approaches its fifth year, some 390,000 Burundian refugees are being generously hosted by the Governments and people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, 349,000 of whom are assisted through the Burundi Regional Refugee Response Plan. While smaller numbers of asylum seekers continue to arrive throughout the region, voluntary returns to Burundi have increased in the last year with more than 55,000 assisted to repatriate as of November 2018.

Foreword

In 2018, the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) drastically worsened, spreading to previously unaffected areas and impacting the Great Lakes region. The ongoing conflicts across much of eastern and central DRC continue to cause significant displacement, damage to property and tragic loss of human life.

In November, 26,000 new displacement were monitored by the UNHCR-led Protection and Returns Monitoring Network (PRMN), a decrease compared to last month. Half of the displacements occurred in Bakool region due to lack of livelihood as pastoralists search for greener pastures. In 2018 so far, PRMN has monitored 858,000 internal displacements due to conflicts, floods and drought.

It is estimated there are 2.6 million internally displaced people in Somalia.

Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

In October, 71,000 new displacements were monitored by the UNHCR-led PRMN, a slight increase compared to last months.
Half of the internally displaced came to Banadir from Lower Shabelle due to conflict.
In 2018 so far, PRMN has monitored 831,000 internal displacements due to conflicts, floods and drought. As of 31 August, there are estimated to be 2.6 million internally displaced people in Somalia.
As of October 2018, UNHCR registered 32,261 refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia. Most people seeking asylum in Somalia are from Ethiopia and Yemen.

The number of refugees and migrants dying while attempting to seek asylum and migrate in an irregular manner to Europe and elsewhere remains high.
At least 1,000 people (including Somalis) have died this year on the Mediterranean Sea alone while thousands more have been rescued at sea.

To raise awareness on the dangers of these journeys, UNHCR in Somalia has launched a campaign dubbed “Telling the Real Story”. The campaign is part of a UNHCR global initiative, which targets a diverse group of people, mainly the youth who may consider embarking on such a journey.

With conditions improving in some parts of the country, Somali refugees continue to return from countries of asylum. UNHCR statistics indicate that over 121,000 people have voluntarily returned from ten countries of asylum since 2014. The countries include Kenya, Yemen, Djibouti, Libya, Tunisia and Eritrea. As of September 2018, UNHCR has registered 31,991 refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia. Most people seeking asylum in Somalia are from Ethiopia and Yemen.

This high-level Regional Border Management workshop is organised by the UN migration Agency IOM and will take place at the Azura Hotel in Nairobi (Kenya) on the 24th to the 26th of October.
