Summary

There remain close to 208,000 registered refugees in the Dadaab camps, mostly of Somali orgin. With continued conflict, instability and drought, causing new displacement in Somalia and reduced humanitarian funding in Dadaab, there is a need to strengthen information on humanitarian needs and access to assistance and services in the camps. Since May 2017, REACH has worked with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) on developing tools and methodologies for data collection in Dadaab refugee camps.

Since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan in December 2013, an estimate of 2.4 million people have been displaced to neighbouring countries. The movement has been fuelled by insecurity, economic crisis and drought, yet is but one of the latest waves of displacement seen over multiple generations. According to estimates, a third of the population of South Sudan remains displaced, of which the vast majority are women and children.

Introduction

Following the outbreak of violence in Juba in July 2016, the conflict in South Sudan expanded to previously peaceful areas, including the Greater Equatoria region (Central, Eastern, and Western Equatoria states). Many areas in the Greater Equatoria region are largely inaccessible to humanitarian actors due to insecurity. As a result, only limited information is available on the humanitarian situation outside of a few large towns and displacement sites.

The ongoing conflict in South Sudan displaced an estimated 4 million people from their homes. According to UNHCR, 2.5 million out of the 4 million displaced South Sudanese have become refugees in neighbouring countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Sudan and Ethiopia. However, due to difficult conditions in refugee camps and settlements, some refugees are reportedly returning to South Sudan even as war rages on.
