The current report is the synthesis of the participatory research carried out as part of the Tax, Privatisation and Right to Education multi country project, and is based on the national reports produced by ActionAid in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Pakistan respectively. It aims to shed light on how much families pay for education in these four countries and how these direct and indirect fees could be eliminated to enable access to education.

INTRODUCTION

ActionAid is working with poor communities across the world to support them in building their resilience to disasters, climate change and other shocks and stresses. This work is of ever-growing importance, not only because of changing weather patterns and rising temperatures increasing the likelihood of disasters, but also because of growing risks related to violent conflict, human and livestock epidemics, environmental degradation and political and economic crises.

In Somalia, 110 people died in two days at the start of March as a result of the ongoing drought, according to the Somali Prime Minister. These deaths should have been entirely preventable. Droughts don’t kill people, droughts don’t have to become a famine or a crisis. What kills people in a drought is a lack of food or water. We can’t make it rain, we can’t change the weather, but we can stop people going hungry and thirsty. It is simply a matter of political will, resources and funding.

Disasters, climate change impacts and conflicts affect millions of people every year. They destroy livelihoods and cause huge and often irreversible damage to the economic, social and cultural fabric of communities and nations. The severity of disaster impact is closely associated with inequality, conflict, environmental degradation, badly planned and managed urban development and weak governance. It is often the poor who are forced to stay in marginalised, unstable and disaster prone areas.

In the UK 1st September means back to school. No doubt some parents are frantically making sure their children are fully equipped for the new school year, while many girls and boys are wishing the summer holidays would never end. But in Kenya, when children return to the classroom, some faces will almost certainly be missing - the faces of girls. Girls who are absent not by choice. Not because they don't want to study.

From this week, stark images of girls in Kenya will be cutting into adverts and video screens across the country. The images are part of a campaign we're launching with ActionAid Kenya to highlight how some girls' lives are being brutally cut short by FGM - whether through the immediate risks or the longer term impact.

I live in Kitale, in the eastern part of Kenya and I’ve been working for ActionAid since 2005. I was born and belong to this community, but unlike the majority of girls as I was growing up, I was lucky. Instead of being forced to have female genital mutilation and enter into early marriage, my parents gave me an education.

Two years ago East Africa experienced its worst drought in 60 years, leaving 13 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. I visited Kenya where ActionAid is using text messages to help deliver food aid and empower drought affected communities.

As I stepped off the bus the first thing that hit me was the blistering heat, then a sharp surge of wind, stinging my eyes with course sand. The ground was rock hard and black. It was obvious Isiolo in northern Kenya had not seen rain in months.

New research from ActionAid reveals that poor quality public services are leaving women and girls vulnerable to violence and harassment in public spaces.

The report, ‘Women and the City II: Combating violence against women and girls in urban public spaces’ is based on research from six cities in Brazil, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia and Nepal. It reveals that women face a constant threat of violence, including rape and sexual harassment, in public spaces, preventing them from living and working in cities without fear of attack.

Sellina lives in a remote village in North East Kenya. Most people there make a living through farming, by growing crops and breeding cows and goats.

But a severe drought in East Africa means many animals have died and not much food will grow in the dry soil.

ActionAid have been distributing emergency food rations to 90,000 people in the area. For local staff this means long days on bumpy roads checking the situation in different villages, letting people know when food is arriving, and then trucking it out there.

ActionAid’s pilot communication project with infoasaid in drought-affected Isiolo in Kenya, has won this year’s ‘Innovation’ award at the 2012 Technology4Good Awards.

The project uses basic mobile phones, SMS network technology and simple community notice boards to give local people vital information on food and livestock prices and food distributions, so people can boost their household income and stay informed of humanitarian activities in their communities.

This time last year, East Africa was in the grip of famine and millions of people were close to starvation.

We launched an emergency appeal and the generous British public donated £79 million to ActionAid and other charities who are part of the Disasters Emergency Committee, which meant we could leap into action fast.

A year on, we’ve been back to see some of the people who were most severely affected by hunger. And it’s good news.

Exactly a year ago, ActionAid took part in the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for East Africa. Then people were starving and famine was declared. Now – whilst there is still a way to go – the situation is so much better. And ActionAid is proud to have played its part.

As the Independent on Sunday wrote, "on the perpetual conveyor belt of unpleasantness that is international news, occasionally there comes a parcel of hope."
