Today, 13 March 2015, Trial Chamber V(B) of the International Criminal Court issued its decision on the withdrawal of charges in the case concerning Mr Uhuru Kenyatta. Noting the Prosecution's withdrawal of charges against Mr Kenyatta, the Chamber decided to terminate the proceedings in this case and to vacate the summons to appear against him.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) expresses its deep regret at the reported abduction and violent death of Mr Meshack Yebei. Mr Yebei was allegedly abducted on 28 December 2014 and found dead on 2 January 2015.

Mr Yebei was not on the Prosecution witness list nor was he in contact with Prosecution staff at the time of his abduction.

Tiina Intelmann, President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, introduced the institution’s newly elected Prosecutor, Fatou B. Bensouda, at a Headquarters press conference today.

The Assembly elected Ms. Bensouda earlier today at the start of its tenth session, which is scheduled to run through 21 December, after a year-long nomination process. A Gambian national and the Court’s Deputy Prosecutor, she would replace current Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo when he steps down next June after nine years.

During the first week of September, the common legal representative for victims, Mr Morris Anyah, held consultations in Kisumu, Kenya with victims authorised to participate in the proceedings in the case The Prosecutor v. Francis Kirimi Muthaura, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta and Mohammed Hussein Ali before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Some of the main issues addressed included the victims’ concerns for their security, clarity on the issue of reparations for the victims and the continuing plight of the internally displaced.
