More than 28,553 cholera / AWD cases and 388 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.4%) have been reported in 10 out of 21 countries of Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) since the beginning of 2018. These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Somalia accounts for 21 % of the total case load reported this year.

• In March 2018, approximately 2.55 million people were food insecure1 , down from 3.4 million as from August 2017. The record-high March to May rains resulted in significant improvement of food security and nutrition status in the second quarter of 2018.   • A new VDPV2 isolated from a contact (EPID SOM/GDO/DLO/18/002-C1) from Dolo district in Gedo region of South zone. It has 38 nucleotide differences from Sabin2. The VP1 sequence shows it has no close genetic link to previously sequenced cVDPV2s; it is classified as VDPV2 and represents a VDPV2 event that has not previously been identified.

  • The contact sample is collected from an IDP camp called KABASA
