For decades, the small, pastoral communities in northern Kenya have been caught in a cycle of violence. Tribes have shed blood over distrust, scarce resources, and the theft of livestock.

Rotary Scholar Monica Kinyua founded the Children Peace Initiative (CPI) Kenya with her twin sister, Jane Wanjiru, to end the fighting by building friendships between children from different tribes.

Drought-stricken villages in northern Kenya received desperately needed aid this week from District 9200 (East Africa) and the Red Cross, which delivered more than 18 tons of food and water.

The hunger crisis plaguing the Turkana district in northern Kenya is a "stark example of what is happening to people in East Africa," says Greeta Manek, District 9200 governor-elect. The Horn of Africa's worst drought in 60 years has sparked famine conditions in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

A recent wild poliovirus outbreak in southern Sudan has spread into parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.

In response, Rotary is providing a total of US$500,000 in emergency grants to UNICEF and the World Health Organization for immediate immunization efforts in the Horn of Africa.

In January, The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved $2.2 million in PolioPlus grants to support immunization activities there.

The outbreak requires urgent action by governments and partner agencies to make the region polio-free, health officials say.

Residents of Kenya need humanitarian aid following the 27 December election that sparked violence across the country. More than 650 people were killed, and more than 250,000 are displaced. Many of the displaced are staying in camps within the Rift Valley and Western Kenya, while others fled into neighboring Uganda and Tanzania.

Immediate needs include blankets, cooking fuel, food, health care, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting, shelter, and water and sanitation. Because of continued violence in the streets, many people have been unable to buy food or go to work.

Rotary International's role as a spearheading partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative often requires a rapid response to emergencies.

In October, for example, the government of Kenya reported a case of polio in a three-year-old girl, the first case of the disease in Kenya since 1984. To help address the risks of the poliovirus spreading across the country, Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Luis Vicente Giay approved a US$350,000 rapid response grant.
