Context and Methodology

Kapoeta town is located in Kapoeta South County, Eastern Equatoria State, near Eastern Equatoria South Sudan’s border with Kenya. Since the beginning of the crisis in South Sudan in December 2013, Kapoeta town has been the gateway through which most internally displaced persons (IDPs) have passed on their way to refugee camps in Kenya.

The Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) has been a gamechanger for WHO. It allows WHO to respond rapidly to disease outbreaks and health emergencies - often in 24 hours or less. This saves lives and helps prevent unnecessary suffering. 10 out of the 21 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) have reported more than 36,820 cholera / AWD cases and 433 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.2%), since the beginning of 2018.

These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe accounts for 28.6 % (10,529) of the total case load reported this year, followed by Somalia at 17% (6,273).

Summary

As of September 2018, close to 240,0001 mostly Somali refugees reside in Dadaab refugee complex. With continued conflict, instability and drought, causing new displacement in Somalia as well as reduced humanitarian funding in Dadaab, there is need to strengthen the knowledge of future return intentions and movement patterns of the refugee population. Since May 2017, REACH has worked with the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) on developing tools and methodologies for data collection in the three camps of Dadaab refugee complex (Dagahaley, IFO, Hagadera).
