Executive Summary

PART I - MULTI-DONOR THEMATIC FUNDS

Under four Multi-donor Thematic Funds which are being managed by relevant Technical Depart-ments, 28 proposals were approved in 2010, totaling UA(1) 34.2 million. These funds are African Wa-ter Facility (AWF), Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative Fund (RWSSI), , NEPAD-Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF), and the Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA).

  1. MAJOR CHANGES SINCE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE HIP

The humanitarian context has faced numerous changes in the course of 2010 in DRC and Kenya. As a consequence DG ECHO has expanded and intensified its interventions. The trend observed in 2010, is likely to continue in 2011 and DG ECHO has decided to slightly increase the ECHO Flight's services in terms of destinations and frequency to very remote areas in order to facilitate the implementation of humanitarian actions which is heavily dependent on the air transport of partners' staff and cargo.

16 December 2010 - The US Fund for UNICEF gratefully acknowledged receipt of a $4 million grant from Google, Inc. to address the critical fundraising gap of $14 million in UNICEF's Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) pipeline for outbreak response. Recent outbreaks in Congo, Kenya, Liberia, and Tajikistan have diminished supply. Funds will enable UNICEF to ensure security in the vaccine pipeline and sustain its polio eradication program in 2011.

Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that can spread rapidly through communities.

ACCRA/NAIROBI, 3 December 2010 (PLUSNEWS) - Some 80 health professionals and telecom operators are meeting in the Ghanaian capital Accra to explore ways to use mobile phones for better healthcare delivery.

"What we are trying to do here is to find out what mobile technology applications will help us fix some of Africa's health problems," said Fiemu Nwariaku, professor of surgery in Ghana and a moderator at the 2-3 December Mobile Health Africa Summit. The efforts are aimed particularly at improving healthcare for underserved populations.

IFAD's Executive Board concludes meeting in Rome

Rome, 15 September 2008 - IFAD's Executive Board approved more than US$177.41 million in loans and US$60.235 million in grants for twelve programmes and projects that will improve the lives of the rural poor in developing countries.

The 94th session of the Board, which met in Rome from 10-11 September, approved an additional US$5.01 million in grants to support agricultural research and development activities.
