Summary

Desert Locust activities increased in western Mauritania in October. Survey and control teams from the National Locust Control Centre (CNLA) controlled second generation hoppers and adults on some 4,214 ha during this month (close to 4,280 ha have been treated since the current control operations began on September 11). Survey and control operations are in progress in Mauritania and neighboring countries are on the look out.

Locust Update

The report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations on the locust situation in western Africa was last updated on March 16 (http://www.fao.org/NEWS/GLOBAL/locusts/Locuhome.htm). While some swarms continue in the region, looking toward this spring, the FAO expects that Northwest Africa will be invaded this spring due to failed winter rains and breeding in Mauritania.

Southern Africa

The outlook for Feb-Apr 2005 southern Africa rainfall at four months lead show a tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall across central South Africa, most of Namibia, the western half of Botswana, portions of southern Angola and, locally, over southwestern Zambia. There is a tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall locally over northern Mozambique. Climatology is expected elsewhere.

JOHANNESBURG, October 1 (Reuters) - Locust plagues in West Africa and ongoing food shortages in southern and eastern Africa will leave millions needing food supplies in the next few months, aid agencies say.

Food shortages in some East African countries have long been endemic, but now experts say the same could be happening in the south of the continent.

Several west African countries have been hit by locusts, which have devastated local crops.

Ethiopia: Emergency food needs in Ethiopia have risen, with 7.8 million people requiring assistance through the end of 2004, up from 7.1 million.
