This update presents some examples of challenges, progress and new developments in global programmes and partnerships since the last strategic overview presented to the 47th meeting of the Standing Committee in March 2010. A more comprehensive report will be provided in the forthcoming Global Appeal 2011 Update.
In one dreary morning, I, the pupil of kindergarten #2, became an IDP; to be more specific, I was forced to become an IDP. In several hours, I lost my friends, home and happy childhood. I experienced the horror of hunger and cold. At age of 6, I realized words "peace" and "bread". The vision of endless flow of people worn out from hunger and cold and the taste of a piece of bread I clutched in my fist will never fade from my memory.

SUBJECT: Implementation of 'responsibility to protect' (R2P).
SIGNIFICANCE: The R2P principle involves an international commitment to protect civilians from systematic human rights violations. Although R2P was endorsed by heads of state and government at the 2005 World Summit, it continues to face opposition.
GENEVA, February 6 (UNHCR) - A cosmopolitan mix of women from the corporate and humanitarian aid fields gathered in Geneva on Friday to discuss the empowerment of displaced woman through livelihoods.
More than 30 people from around the world attended the half-day "Worlds of Women Coming Together" meeting, co-organized by the UN Refugee Agency and Women's International Networking. Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, general secretary of the World YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association), gave the keynote address.

GEORGIA: DELIVERING SUPPLIES AND FOOD
UMCOR Georgia delivered $190,600 in medicines and medical supplies to hospitals throughout Georgia, as well as emergency food supplies to those affected by the recent conflict.
The delivery of antibiotics, syringes, sterile gloves and other items were part of two US Government-sponsored airlifts for humanitarian assistance that arrived in Georgia on Aug. 13 and 14. UMCOR is coordinating the distribution of the medical supplies. On Aug.
Each week, the World Health Organization Health Action in Crises in Geneva produces information highlights on critical health-related activities in countries where there are humanitarian crises. Drawing on the various WHO programmes, contributions cover activities from field and country offices and the support provided by WHO regional offices and headquarters. The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.
