EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Horn of Africa comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda covers approximately 5.2 million square kilometers with more than 65% of the land receiving less than 500mm of rainfall annually. This region is home to over 217 million people with diverse and rich culture, resources and opportunities which have enabled them to harness livelihoods over the years.

Introduction to media monitoring

Media monitoring is conducted using international methodological standards of quantitative and qualitative analysis. The media monitoring unit observes media coverage of the elections in order to assess:

  • The access granted to candidates, political parties and coalitions in the mass media and whether the coverage of candidates, political parties and coalitions is fair and balanced;

  • Whether candidates, political parties and coalitions standing for election were covered in a unbiased and equitable manner;

Kenyans demonstrate strong commitment to democratic elections

Summary

• Kenya’s General Elections were characterised by a huge society-wide push for peaceful, transparent and credible elections. Kenyans should be congratulated for their civic pride and responsibility, queuing patiently for long hours to cast their vote. While several serious violent incidents occurred in some parts of the country, overall the atmosphere was calm and the democratic spirit of Kenyans prevailed.
