Asylum seekers and refugees in Kayole, Eastleigh and Kitengela have made great strides integrating into the social and economic life of Nairobi. The livelihoods baseline illustrates that the socio-economic profile of the urban asylum seeker or refugee is not that of desperation and dependence. Rather it is one of incredible resilience in the face of significant odds. The majority are engaged in economic activities in the informal sector, and have made modest gains with limited support from the Government of Kenya or the humanitarian community.
The just-published 2012 Annual Report on Switzerland's International Cooperation sets out a unified strategy that encompasses – for the first time – humanitarian aid, technical and financial cooperation, economic and trade policy measures, and cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe. SDC Director-General Martin Dahinden and State Secretary and Director of SECO Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch stress that this important milestone has been welcomed both by Parliament and by public opinion.

“We are illiterate and we realize that information is a powerful tool. Though we are still illiterate now, I can say we are far better than before because of the radio programme.” (Male livestock trader, Lafaley) “We really benefited as a community (from these phones). You cannot imagine how such a small thing has helped us. You know, we are marginalized as we do not have a chief or a councillor. SC is now our saviour.” (Women’s group, Meygag)
This report presents the findings of an infoasaid learning review conducted between 09 and 14 July 2012, which sought to examine the implementation and results of a 6-month infoasaid/World Vision Kenya (WVK) pilot accountability/communication project implemented in Taita Taveta County, Coast Province, Kenya from February - July 2012. It is hoped that the findings will enhance learning and support WVK to improve its communication with the drought-affected population of Taita Taveta and its on-going Protracted Relief and Rehabilitation Operation.
The food price crisis of 2007–2008 and recent resurgence of food prices have focused increasing attention on the causes and consequences of food price volatility in international food markets and the developing world, particularly in Africa south of the Sahara. In this paper, we examine the patterns and trends in food price volatility using an unusually rich database of African staple food prices. We find that international grain prices have become more volatile in recent years (2007–2010) but no evidence that food price volatility has increased in the region.
