The Federal Foreign Office supported 307 projects for humanitarian aid, humanitarian mine clearance as well as disaster prevention all over the world in 2003 to the tune of EUR 71.5 million.

NAIROBI, le 23 décembre (IRIN) - La conférence régionale pour la paix et le développement ne se tiendra pas en juin 2004 comme prévu, en raison "de certains délais dans l'établissement et les activités de quelques commissions nationales préparatoires, notamment celle de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC)", a annoncé vendredi le bureau du représentant spécial du secrétaire général des Nations Unies pour les Grands Lacs.
NAIROBI, 23 December (IRIN) - The World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday said it welcomed the Kenyan government's contribution, worth US $2.9 million, towards its school feeding programme in the country.
Nairobi (dpa) - Kenyan government maize contributions to a national school feeding programme are highly welcome but might not be enough to ensure that the programme continues next year, the World Food Programme (WFP) said Tuesday.
The government donated 13,500 tons of maize worth almost three million dollars to the initiative, which provides a hot lunch at school to one million Kenyan children.
"This contribution again demonstrates the Government of Kenya's strong commitment to school feeding.
Nairobi, 22 December (IRIN) - A regional peace and development conference will not likely take place in June 2004 as had been foreseen, owing to "some delays in the setting up and operations of some National Preparatory Committees, notably that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)", the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region reported on Friday.

If short rains fail, more than 40 percent in Coast districts expected to become highly food insecure
An estimated 260,000 persons in coastal households are highly food insecure, following 2-3 successive failures of the more important long-rains season. Another 310,000 persons are expected to be similarly food insecure, should the October -- December short rains fail. The short rains that normally begin in early September are more than one month late in the worst-affected areas.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and software giant Microsoft Corp. signed an agreement today in Geneva that will bring training and computer education for refugees in camps located in Kenya and the Russian Federation.

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced an $800,000 grant to expand a public-private alliance with Foods Resource Bank (FRB) to address hunger through unique agricultural development programs in the developing world. The USAID-FRB alliance was formed in 2002 with an initial $500,000 grant.
In early October 2003, the Veterinary Department of the Government of Kenyan declared the presence of rinderpest in parts of Garissa district (Northeastern Province) bordering Somalia based on blood samples collected form Amuma and Jarajila locations. These samples confirmed the presence of a low-grade virus causing a mild form of rinderpest, for which mortality rates are low. Previously unconfirmed cases of rinderpest were mentioned among wild animals across the border but that does not disturb the cross border livestock movement and trade.
