MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

Over 819,000 Somalis are living outside their county as asylum-seekers and refugees. The majority (767,500) live in neighbouring countries of Ethiopia (256,000), Kenya (255,500) and Yemen (256,000). UNHCR strives to find durable solutions for Somali refugees to enable them to rebuild their lives either in the country of asylum, resettle to a third country or by supporting voluntary return. So far, UNHCR has assisted 83,669 refugees to return to Somalia in safety and dignity from nine different countries of asylum.

UNHCR together with governmental counterparts and partners assist and coordinate repatriation of Somali refugees. Since the beginning of the voluntary return programme in December 2014, 81,677 Somali refugees were supported to repatriate from eight countries of asylum (4,940 this year). Each Somali family receive the enhanced return package that supports returnees in restarting their lives and restoring their livelihoods after return.

WaPOR: database dissemination portal and APIs

The FAO portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR) monitors and reports on agriculture water productivity over Africa and the Near East.

It provides open access to the water productivity database and its thousands of underlying map layers, it allows for direct data queries, time series analyses, area statistics and data download of key variables associated to water and land productivity assessments.

It’s difficult to talk about freedom of the media in Africa today, without talking about the worrying events happening in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. Restrictions of and challenges to the media in these countries illustrate current declines in media freedom at the regional level, and reveal a level of hostility toward the media and contraction of civic space openly encouraged by leaders.

One of the durable solutions of displaced persons is voluntary repatriation in safety and dignity. UNHCR Somalia supports Somali refugees who decide to repatriate on a voluntary and informed basis, and provides return assistance to support the safe and dignified return and their sustainable reintegration in the area of return. 1 Around 835,900 Somali refugees are still displaced in the region, while 81,000 repatriated with UNHCR support since 2014 and 35,000 returned spontaneously from Yemen.
