Main results of the Council

The Council discussed migration issues in relation to developments in the Southern Neighbourhood Region. Ministers addressed, in particular, the follow-up to the Council conclusions on the management of migration from the Southern Neighbourhood of 11 12 April 2011 and the Commission communication on migration of 4 May 2011.

The Council also had a first exchange of views on the Commission's evaluation of and future strategy for EU readmission agreements with third countries, published in February 2011.

Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, in charge of Home Affairs, will meet with European Union Home Affairs ministers in Brussels on 12 May 2011 in the morning, on the occasion of an extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council dedicated primarily to the situation in the Southern Mediterranean and the presentation of the Commission Communication on Migration of 4 May. The state of play regarding the revision of the FRONTEX Regulation aiming at strengthening the Agency will also be discussed.

Unaccompanied children as young as 12 are risking their lives as they flee political instability in North Africa in migrant boats bound for Europe, Save the Children has warned.

120 lone children are at a reception centre on the Italian island of Lampedusa after making a potentially deadly journey across the Mediterranean in boats. Such children frequently arrive on the island cold, hungry and terrified after spending days at sea without enough food, water and shelter.

The new hospital in Caia (district to the north-west of Beira, capital of Sofala Province and Mozambique’s second city) will soon be opening its doors. The imminent opening is thanks to the agreement signed on 7 May 2011 at the Provincial Government headquarters in Beira, by President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Lorenzo Dellai, Italian Ambassador, Carlo Lo Cascio, and the Governor of Sofala Province, Carvalho Muaria.

News of a growing number of boat tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea are coming to light as desperate migrants seek to escape the conflict in Libya.

LONDON (AlertNet) - A leading aid agency has lambasted Italy for its “wholly inadequate” response to thousands of Africans fleeing the war in Libya, including many who have suffered torture and other violence.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) says Italy must “drastically improve … the appalling reception and living conditions” for migrants, who are reaching its shores in overcrowded boats, often in shock and suffering from hypothermia, dehydration and other ailments.
