IOM welcomes the solution relating to 102 migrants stranded since Monday (5/8) aboard the tanker M/T Salamis off the Maltese coast. The tanker, which was stopped by the Maltese navy before it entered Maltese territorial waters, has now been diverted to the Italian port of Syracuse.

The migrants, who were drifting at sea when rescued by the Salamis, reportedly include pregnant women and other vulnerable individuals.

Despite this, aid officials warn "money is going out as fast as it is coming in", and that the UN's multibillion-dollar requests still may not be enough in a crisis where demands frequently outstrip resources.

LONDON — Malta has been forced to cancel the forced return of dozens of Somali migrants to Libya, after an emergency ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. The EU has criticized the attempted repatriation, but Malta has accused its European partners of a lack of solidarity. It comes after the Pope visited an Italian island earlier this week that's received thousands of migrants.

ROME, Italy, July 5 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency said on Friday that an estimated 8,400 migrants and asylum-seekers landed on the coasts of Italy and Malta in the first six months of this year. The majority arrived in Italy (7,800), while Malta received around 600 migrants and asylum-seekers.

"Those making this journey mostly departed from North Africa, principally Libya – around 6,700 people. The remaining 1,700 crossed from Greece and Turkey, landing in southern Italy's Apulia and Calabria regions," a UNHCR spokesman said.

21 June 2013, Rome - Poor women and youth in marginalized areas of Kenya and South Sudan will gain improved access to markets for their agricultural produce, under a new project agreement.

The $1.9 million project falls under a broader FAO-Italy programme of food security through commercialization of agriculture, in Eastern Africa, West Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.

Sets priority countries, activities for working with FAO

6 June 2013, Rome - Italy has announced it will contribute an additional €6 million to support FAO's strategic priorities including €1 million towards the Organization's emergency programme.

The announcement came at the end of a two-day Annual Review Meeting, during which FAO and Italian officials reviewed the Italy/FAO Cooperative Programme including the results achieved by more than 50 Italy-funded projects with a total budget of US$127.2 million.

The Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants conducted a visit to Italy from 29 September to 8 October 2012. He visited Rome, Florence, Palermo, Trapani, Bari and Castel Volturno, and held consultations with Italian Government officials at central and local levels, civil society organizations, and migrants themselves.

Financed entirely by eleven donors, the World Bank-administered Emergency Services Support Program (ESSP) Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) provided key financing for the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) social sector emergency program. This program was successfully implemented, despite the difficult security context, and benefited the entire Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza. At the conclusion of the project, public facilities continued to operate at the same or higher levels than the 2007 baselines.

ROME, 25 March 2013 - Italy has moved to empower its leaders to make better informed decisions to reduce the country's overall disaster risk.

The government is in the process of establishing a national disaster loss database in the wake of last year's devastating series of earthquakes and after-shocks that caused EUR13 billion of losses.

The disaster, in the Emilia-Romagna, Lombardia and Veneto regions, resulted in the loss of a stock of Parmesan cheese that alone was worth an estimated EUR200 million.
