Highlights in August

• Between February and July 2017, IOM recorded 27,117 refugees and migrants leaving Niger towards North Africa, compared with 221,992 during the same period in 2016. This dramatic decline is largely the result of the increased security in towns along the major route between Niger and Libya. According to IOM, migration routes are currently very diffuse, covering much of the Agadez region in the north of Niger, making identification of migrants, but also the provision of assistance to them, more difficult.

Distinguished Delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

A year ago, States gathered in New York to reaffirm the fundamental values of solidarity and protection for people forced into exile.

They agreed to share responsibility for embedding them in practical action.

And they decided to address and resolve refugee flows through a new model that places the rights, interests and potential of refugees and of their hosts at the heart of a comprehensive response.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Realising this ambition has never been more urgent.

Annual Report 2016

In 2016, we increased our humanitarian efforts in some of the world’s most challenging environments. As the war in Syria entered its sixth year, our £26.6 million emergency response programme supported over three million vulnerable people living in Syria as well as refugees in three neighbouring countries. In Iraq and Yemen, as the crises continued to shatter lives, we provided life-saving aid, often in areas that other organisations are unable to access.
