RANYA, Iraq (Reuter) - Iraqi Kurdish forces which had been supported by President Saddam Hussein fled an advance by their Kurdish rivals as fierce fighting Monday marred a renewed U.S. bid to bring the two warring parties together.

SALAHUDDIN, Iraq (Reuter) - Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani Thursday threatened to ask Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for further aid against a rival militia six weeks after earlier Iraqi intervention unleased a retaliatory U.S. missile strike.
The United States said it hoped there would be no reason to use U.S. military forces again.
''If the Kurdish people are under hard pressure of the PUK, we will ask for help from Iraq,'' Barzani told a news conference at his headquarters near the northern town of Salahuddin.

Several of you have called for information on northern Iraq. UNHCR does not monitor military activities, so there's not a lot I can tell you on that front. From UNHCR's perspective, we're on the alert for any sizeable population movements or returns, but so far we have no firm reports of any such movements. There has been some speculation that some of the estimated 40,000 people who fled the north to Iran last month could now elect to return to the Sulaimaniya area, so we'll be on the lookout for any sign of that.
DEGALA, Iraq (Reuter) - An Iraqi Kurdish militia backed by President Saddam Hussein battled with a resurgent rival group in northern Iraq Tuesday in a bid to win back lost ground in see-saw fighting closely watched by Washington.
The Saddam-backed militiamen pushed their rivals six miles back in a counterattack aimed at retaking a key town, witnesses said.
About 2,000 Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) fighters deployed near the town of Degala moved closer to their target, Koy

THE IRAQI MINISTER -- SPEAKING IN THE U-N GENERAL ASSEMBLY -- ALSO CHARGED THAT U-N WEAPONS INSPECTORS ARE BEING USED AS POLITICAL TOOLS BY WASHINGTON. V-O-A'S CORRESPONDENT ELAINE JOHANSON REPORTS:
The cumulative effects of economic sanctions, hyper-inflation , unemployment and this year's 30 percent drop in crop production have led to a disquieting level of hardship for vulnerable groups in Iraq. Malnutrition is rampant and less than 50 percent of children and women are receiving more than half of their caloric needs. Recent hostilities in the north have further exacerbated an already dismal humanitarian situation throughout Iraq. An estimated 20,000 people have been displaced from their homes and an additional 30,000 people have sought refuge in Iran.
