A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck northern Haiti on October 6, 2018 frightening residents across the country. At least 17 people lost their lives and more than 400 people have been injured by the strong tremor. In its wake, thousands of households are affected. The Haitian Red Cross and American Red Cross have been providing critical aid in the earthquake’s aftermath.

The situation

According to the Technical Unit of Seismology, a 5.9-magitude earthquake on the Richter scale occurred on Saturday, 6 October 2018 at 20:12 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Its epicenter 20km north of Port-de-Paix (north-west) at a depth of 15 km.

The earthquake was felt across most of Haiti’s departments and its capital Port-au Prince (West department) and in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and it was followed by two aftershocks. The DPC did not issue a tsunami alert after the earthquake.

According with the first report of the Haitian National Risk and Disaster Management System, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Saturday, October 6 at 8:12 p.m in Haiti. According to the Technical Seismology Unit, its epicentre was located at sea in the Turtle Channel, about 20 km west-northwest of Port-de-Paix, Northwest Department. The tremor was felt throughout all the country’s departments, creating an initial panic in several cities. The initial report indicates that the earthquake killed ten people – seven in Port-de-Paix (Northwest) and three in Gros Morne (Artibonite).

This is a preliminary final report. There are two outstanding provisions regarding the working advance balance in hand of two National Societies. The total of provision is CHF 28,536. The remaining balance from the contribution received from USAID, will be transferred to the projects in the Caribbean, linked to the 2018 Development Operational Plan. The remaining balance is CHF 1,550,339. the final narrative and financial reports will be published as soon as possible.
