HURRICANE EARL BELIZE

Earl touched ground as a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday, 04 August.
Authorities distributed packages with food and water to the people affected, and also opened emergency shelters. Some 2,500 people were located in 94 emergency shelters, 164 are still sheltered. Earl affected 1,046 people in the departments of Quiché and Petén. 162 houses were reported with damages, and classes were suspended in the affected departments.

At 2:00 p.m. (EDT) the center of Tropical Storm Earl was located near latitude 16.3 North and longitude80.8 West or about 210 miles (340km) South of Grand Cayman. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85km/h). Tropical storm strength winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km). The system is moving toward the west at 22 mph (35 km/h). This motion is expected to continue over the next 48 hours with some decrease in forward speed.

In Central America, one of the world's most disaster prone regions, WFP has taken the lead in developing a disaster early warning system.

The new system works as a one-stop shop for information on droughts, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and volcanic eruptions.

Hurricane Dean, the first hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic season, entered the eastern Caribbean on Friday, August 17, bringing torrential downpours and intense winds to the islands of St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, and Guadalupe.

Over the weekend, the hurricane intensified, hitting southern Haiti and the island of Jamaica, damaging rooftops and flooding streets.
