Nassau – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has taken the lead, alongside the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), to assist the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Renewal with shelter coordination and management.

Through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Government has taken the responsibility of coordinating the emergency response from its Nassau-based National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).

  • The core of intense Hurricane Joaquin begins to move away from the central Bahamas Joaquin is now a Category 3 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

  • Joaquin is expected to produce heavy rainfall over the central Bahamas, with some rainfall expected over the southeastern Bahamas, northwestern Bahamas, eastern Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

  • This rainfall could result in life-threatening flash floods.

Le Centre Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) a exprimé ses inquiétudes par rapport à l’application discriminatoire de nouvelles politiques d’immigration aux Bahamas. Selon les informations collectées par cet organisme de droits humains, les agents de l’immigration bahamienne ont mené des raids d’arrestation massive au sein de la communauté migrante haïtienne aux Bahamas, les 1er et 2 novembre 2014. Ils ont par la suite augmenté leur présence aux alentours des écoles publiques où il y a une forte concentration d’élèves nés de parents haïtiens.

On 25 August, 6.00 UTC, it was a Tropical Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 85 km/h and its centre was located over water, east of the Bahamas, approximately 160 km north-west of the island of San Salvador. In the following 48 h, it is expected to move north-north-east, away from land, slightly intensifying.
