Haiti faces extensive structural food and nutritional insecurity, in part due to the high levels of extreme poverty affecting a quarter of its population. According to an evaluation by the National Food Security Coordination Unit (CNSA)1, 3.3 million people in rural areas (56% of the total rural population) are struggling to maintain their livelihoods and being forced to sell assets, pushing them into a vicious cycle of poverty.

The end of the month of November also marked the end of the 2017 hurricane season. Even though Haiti was spared from the major hurricanes that hit the region, hurricanes Irma and Maria, still had an impact on the country, notably the Nord-Est department, which was classified in crisis phase (IPC phase 3) in the IPC report for October 2017 - February 2018. Grand'Anse department was also classified in crisis phase. The IPC report further revealed that about 1.32 million people are severely food insecure in Haiti.

SITUATION

  • Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Three quarters of the population lives on less than $2 per day, making Haiti extremely vulnerable to price spikes in the global food market as well as natural disasters.

  • Haiti remains susceptible to environmental shocks, such as Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, whose impacts continue to drive food insecurity across the country.

En plus, un foyer de choléra a été répertorié dans le département du Nord-Ouest où 157 cas ont été enregistrés, montrant une petite remontée de l’épidémie vers le nord du pays. Malgré cela, de janvier à novembre 2017, le pays a enregistré un total de 12 990 cas suspects de choléra et 141 décès, soit une baisse respective de 67 % et de 66 % en comparaison à la même période en 2016.

In November, Artibonite remained the most affected department with 402 suspected cases. Cholera outbreak was also reported in the Nord-Ouest department where 157 cases were recorded, showing a slight reemergence of the epidemic towards the north of the country. December 14, 2017, BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is supporting the Government of Haiti in reducing poverty, building resilience, and achieving sustained economic growth for all. A new Country Strategy, approved by CDB’s Board of Directors today, proposes a programme of assistance of USD100 million for the period 2017 to 2021 to help Haiti meet its development priorities. This total includes USD45 million in grant resources.
