Bern, 17.10.2016 - Swiss humanitarian operations in Haiti are focusing on the south-west of the country, hardest hit by the storm. More specialists left Bern today to reinforce our on-site teams. Switzerland's priorities include ensuring access to drinking water and fighting the spread of cholera, while also providing support for operations by the United Nations and the International Federation of the Red Cross.

To meet the needs of survivors, Switzerland has sent experts to the affected areas and has earmarked CHF 2 million in aid.

Smallholder farmers produce almost half the world’s food. Nevertheless, in developing countries many farming families live in poverty. Although in Switzerland farmers whose crops are destroyed by hail can claim compensation from their insurance companies, this is not the case with the overwhelming majority of smallholder farmers in developing countries. For them, floods, droughts or other extreme meteorological phenomena cause the loss of a large part of their livelihoods.

La République dominicaine, Haïti et le Mexique recevront chacun cent mille francs au titre de l'aide d'urgence.

Une légère amélioration de la situation humanitaire se dessine en République dominicaine grâce au passage à un temps plus stable. Jusqu'au 8 novembre 2007, deux membres du Corps suisse d'aide humanitaire de la DDC ont apporté leur soutien aux victimes ne bénéficiant d'aucune aide étatique.

El tiempo se mantiene estable por el momento, lo cual ha aliviado ligeramente la situación humanitaria en la Rep=FAblica Dominicana. Hasta el 8.11.2007 dos miembros del cuerpo de la COSUDE se encargan sobre el terreno de asistir a las víctimas que no reciben ayuda estatal.

An amount of CHF 100,000 has been earmarked for emergency relief measures in each of the hard-hit countries of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Mexico.

The humanitarian situation in the Dominican Republic has slightly improved thanks to the presently stabilized weather conditions. Up until 8 November, two members of the SDC's Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) were on site to provide support to victims receiving no government assistance.

A total of 200,000 Swiss francs has been earmarked for emergency measures and ascertaining needs in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Mexico.

Since Saturday, a Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) expert has been working with the UN and in coordination with local authorities, the Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Switzerland's Consulate General in Santo Domingo on identifying requirements and initiating emergency measures where appropriate.

In Haiti, the SDC Cooperation Office in Port-au-Prince is in charge of this work.
