Foreword

The 2017 hurricane season in the Caribbean was unprecedented. High-powered, high impact hurricanes, including Irma and Maria, left a path of destruction, infrastructure damage and casualties in more than a dozen territories in the region. Without forecasts and warnings, the tragic loss of life would have been even higher.

The report is part of FAO’s EWEA system, which aims to translate forecasts and early warnings into anticipatory action.

ROME – Le PAM a lancé une série d’opérations pour répondre aux dégâts causés par l’ouragan Irma dans les Caraïbes. Cette assistance vient soutenir les gouvernements nationaux, les organisations régionales, les agences de services de secours et catastrophes et les acteurs humanitaires de la région.

Plus de 200 000 personnes ont été touchées par l’ouragan - une des tempêtes les plus fortes jamais enregistrées dans l’Atlantique - dans l’Est des Caraïbes, région la plus gravement atteinte. Certaines îles, dont la Barbade et Saint-Martin, sont devenues presque inhabitables.

ROME – WFP has launched a range of operations in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma across the Caribbean. These assistance activities are being mounted in support of national governments, regional organizations, disaster agencies and humanitarian actors across the region.

Worst hit by the hurricane – one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever recorded – has been the Eastern Caribbean where as many as 200,000 people have been affected. Some islands, including Barbuda and St. Martin, are reported to be near uninhabitable.

Situation Report No 1 was published on September 6, 2017, and Situation Report No 2 was published on September 7.
