L'équipe de la Chaîne suisse de sauvetage a mis un terme à ses recherches dans la zone du tremblement de terre au Nord d'Athènes et rentrera en Suisse vendredi soir. L'arrêt des recherches a été décidé jeudi soir en accord avec le grand responsable athénien des travaux de dégagement, après que la totalité des bâtiments effondrés où l'on pensait pouvoir retrouver des personnes vivantes ont été contrôlés par des chiens de catastrophe.
Les chiens suisses ont localisé au total 14 personnes. Grâce à ce travail de localisation, trois personnes ont pu être sauvées.

Baltimore (IOCC) - Responding to the estimated 70,000 people left homeless as a result of this week's earthquake in Athens, International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) has arranged for the transport and distribution of emergency relief supplies to aid the quake's victims. More than 5 metric tons of urgently needed equipment, including tents and emergency food supplies, have been prepared for immediate distribution to the hardest hit areas of the city.

ATHENS, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Rain added to the misery of thousands of homeless Greeks on Thursday as the survivors of a powerful earthquake struggled to find shelter away from houses deemed too dangerous to enter.
Rescue workers pulled a woman from the wreckage of a flattened detergent factory but said no sounds were emanating from the debris or from the site of a destroyed appliance showroom where they were also searching.

President Clinton offered his condolences to the families of victims of the earthquake that struck Greece September 7 and said the United States is prepared to help the Greek government respond to the disaster.
In a statement released September 8, Clinton also noted Greece's "generous assistance" to Turkey following the earthquake in that country last month, and he welcomed Turkey's pledge of support now for Greeks "in their hour of need."

ATHENS, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Rescue teams working in heavy rain early on Thursday freed two more survivors from the wreckage of a Greek factory in the aftermath of an earthquake that killed at least 67 people and left thousands homeless.
"Two more people have been rescued from the Ricomex detergent factory and we are inches away from a trapped woman who is talking to us," a senior fireman told Reuters.
"The rain makes things difficult but now we have a better idea where to look. Those rescued have told us where the people were when the quake hit.
Due to a request from the Greek government, and based on the decision of the Chief of Staff, an IDF mission will depart this evening (8 September) to assist in the search and rescue of the victims of the earthquake that struck Greece yesterday afternoon (7 September).

ATHENS, Sept 8 (Reuters) - More strong aftershocks jolted Athens on Wednesday as the earthquake death toll rose to 55 and rescue teams searched for dozens of missing people still feared trapped under the rubble.
The Health and Welfare Ministry said the dead included 12 children, some killed when their nursery collapsed in the quake that shook the Greek capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Another 1,557 people were injured, 25 seriously, and 65 were still missing after the quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale levelled buildings, trapping people inside.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching a preliminary appeal for 750,000 Swiss francs to assist 15,000 people hit by yesterday's earthquake in Greece.

ATHENS, Sept 8 (Reuters) - The death toll from the Greek earthquake has risen to 53, the semi-official Athens News Agency reported on Wednesday.
The agency quoted a list of names provided by the Welfare Ministry, which included 12 children. Another 65 people were still missing and out of 1,557 injured only 25 were seriously hurt, it said.
The quake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, knocked down buildings in Athens early on Tuesday afternoon and sent thousands of people onto the streets in panic.

ATHENS, Sept 7 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake shook Athens on Tuesday, reportedly killing one person, damaging buildings and sending thousands of people fleeing into the streets in panic.
The quake, measuring 5.9 on the open-ended Richter scale, hit at 2:56 p.m. (1156 GMT), shaking buildings for about 10 seconds.
Greek television said it had an unconfirmed report of one person killed when a factory collapsed in the capital.
