NWS Summary: At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Isaac was located near latitude 14.4 North, longitude 45.0 West. Isaac is moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h). A westward motion with a slight increase in forward speed is expected through the end of the week. On the forecast track, Isaac should move across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected over the next day or two.

Interpretation

Between September 18 and 19, 2017 and only a few days after hurricane Irma, another powerful tropical cyclone, Maria, also classified as a category 5 hurricane, hit several islands of the Caribbean {mainly Dominica, Guadeloupe or Puerto Rico}. The islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique endured widespread flooding, damaged roofs and uprooted trees, and two deaths are reported in Guadeloupe.

Maria is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h), and this motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected through Tuesday night. On the forecast track, the center of Maria will move across the Leeward Islands late today and tonight, over the extreme northeastern Caribbean Sea Tuesday and Tuesday night, and approach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Wednesday.

A turn toward the west-northwest and a slower forward speed are expected during next couple of days. On the forecast track, the center of Maria will be near the Leeward Islands Monday or Monday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours, and Maria is forecast to be a hurricane when it approaches the Leeward Islands.

On the forecast track, the core of Jose will pass close or just east of the northern Leeward Islands. Maximum sustained winds are near 150 mph (240 km/h) with higher gusts.
