Tropical Cyclone Zoe has slowly lost strength in Nadi today after swirling back to Fiji late last weekend.

Director of Meteorology Rajendra Prasad said at 9am today (31/12/02), Tropical Cyclone Zoe was located near 16 decimal 5 South 173 decimal 5 east which is 230 nautical miles (425 km) northwest of Nadi and was moving south west at approximately 20 km per hour.

"The cyclone has undergone a rapid weakening overnight with maximum average winds now estimated to be 55 knots (100 km/hr) and momentary gust to 80 knots (150 km/hr close to its center," Mr.

HONIARA, Dec 31 (Reuters) - The departure of a Solomon Islands patrol boat carrying aid and medicine to three islands hit by a massive cyclone has been delayed until the government pays for emergency food supplies, officials said on Tuesday.

The fate of 1,000 Solomon Islanders remained unknown two days after Cyclone Zoe, a maximum-category tropical storm, battered the islands on Sunday with winds exceeding 300 km an hour (186 mph) and huge waves.

Tropical Cyclone 06P (Zoe) was located over the Western Pacific Oceasn near 11.1S 172.6E at 03:00 UTC.  Zoe has been moving west-southwestward at 8 knots with maximum sustained winds estimated at 95 knots, gusts to 115.

A category 5 tropical cyclone named Zoe with winds above 300km/h hit the islands of Tikopia, Fataka and Anuta, in the Solomon Islands (SOI) on 28 December 2002, affecting a total population of approximately 1,200 people. At 2 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) Zoe was about 75 km east of Tikopia. The SOI meteorological service has warned that flooding could also affect the islands.
