It’s early morning and students are lining up outside the school, eager to have their homework checked.

"Excellent work, students!" Nyanchew Chuol says loudly. As she is going through every single exercise book, the teacher is generous with her encouraging comments.

Two years ago, Mulusew Kebede had never imagined owning a business. On her small farm near Woldiya, Ethiopia, Mulusew, aged 43, and her family grew crops and raised a few livestock. But starting a new business was something she never thought was possible.

A project supported by Canadian Foodgrains Bank member Mennonite Central Committee changed things. As part of the project, Mulusew and 17 of her neighbours started a self-help group.

However, several areas along the East Africa coastal strip and in the Somali region of Ethiopia received well above average rainfall amounts during this period.

MSF sent an emergency team to the Kenyan side of the border to assist the wounded arriving from the Ethiopian town of Moyale, where violence erupted on 14 December.

The team is providing support to Takaba district hospital in Mandera county, which received more than 100 wounded in the three days from 14 to 16 December.

MSF emergency coordinator Abubakar Mohamed, who has worked for MSF in emergencies for more than 20 years, describes the situation.

Regional government asks aid agencies to scale up emergency response to the humanitarian crisis.

Over 200,000 people fled ethnic conflict to camps in the Somali region of Ethiopia since July. This pushes the total to over 700,000 that fled inter-communal violence in recent years, according to the latest Displacement Tracking Matrix for Ethiopia. Most came from the Oromia region. Overall nearly 1.1 million people are displaced in the Somali region when other causes such as drought and flood are included.
