Kakuma refugee camp and nearby Kalobeyei settlement in Turkana County in north-western Kenya today host close to 186,000 refugees from South Sudan, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Burundi and Sudan amongst others.

East Africa worst hit by internal displacement in first half of 2018

Geneva, 12 September 2018 - Latest figures from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) reveal that millions of people across the world have become displaced inside their own country since January. Worldwide, there were 5.2 million new internal displacements associated with conflict and violence in the first half of 2018, based on the analysis of data from the 10 worst-affected countries.

Overview Refugee Children in Addis Ababa

As of August 2018 a total of 22’802 refugees reside in Addis Ababa, mostly from Eritrea, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and the Great Lakes region. Of the total urban refugee population 7698 (34%) are children. 868 are unaccompanied and separated (377 UAC, 491 SC). Whereas 18’981 refugees are residing in Addis under the Out of Camp Policy, 3821 refugees are urban assisted due to their medical, protection or humanitarian needs and receiving financial assistance from UNHCR and partners.

Kenya must halt the ongoing crackdown on undocumented migrant workers that have seen homes raided and hundreds of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers arrested around the country, Amnesty International said today.

The raids have intensified since 27 August, when the country’s Immigration Department set up a hotline number for citizens to report irregular migrants in their neighbourhoods. The authorities’ actions targeting irregular migrants have mostly affected refugees and asylum seekers.
