The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 810TH meeting held on 22 November 2018, adopted the following decision on the situation in the Horn of Africa:
Takes note of the briefings by Ambassador Smaïl Chergui, Commissioner for Peace and Security on the developments in the Horn of Africa, as well as the statements made by the representatives of the countries of the Horn of Africa, namely Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan;

Addis Ababa, 9 July 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the Joint Declaration signed by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed following the latter’s visit to Asmara on 8 and 9 July 2018. He commends the two leaders for choosing the courageous path of reconciliation, in the interest of their people, the region and Africa as a whole.
Following the conclusion of the 31st AU Summit held in Nouakchott, Mauritania from the 25th of June to 2nd July 2018, the key activities, decisions and declarations of the Summit are provided below.
1. AFRICAN CONTINENTAL FREE TRADE AREA (AfCFTA)
• 49 of the 55 member states of the African Union (AU) have now signed the agreement establishing the AfCFTA. While six countries 6 have ratified the agreement
Addis Ababa, 14 June 2016: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, expresses deep concern over reports of border clashes between Ethiopia and Eritrea in the Tsorena border area.
The Chairperson calls on the two countries to exercise utmost restraint and to refrain from any statement and action likely to aggravate the situation and further endanger regional stability.

Addis Ababa, 26th January 2012 – During her press conference on 26th January, Mrs Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, gave a brief report on the issue of agriculture and food security, in context of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP); and climate change in relation to COP 17.

Addis Ababa, September 22, 2011 - The African Ambassadors Spouses Group (AASG) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 21st September ( World Peace Day), made a donation of 100,000 Ethiopian Birr equivalent to about 5800 U.S. dollars to the African Union (AU) as a contribution to the humanitarian situation in the Horn Africa.
Exceptionally dry weather conditions have severely affected eastern parts of the Horn of Africa since September 2010. The sustained dry conditions, which have stretched through two consecutive rainy seasons, have resulted in severe degradation of vegetation conditions throughout the region, impacting crop production and pasture availability - some 80 percent of the population in this subregion depends for its livelihood on crop and livestock production where only 1 percent of arable land is irrigated - compared with 7 percent in Africa and 38 percent in Asia.
