The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 797th meeting held on 24 September 2018, at the ministerial level, adopted the following decision on the State of Peace and Security in Africa and the Initiatives and Steps for Promoting African Solutions to African Problems:

Addis Ababa, 19 September 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has received with utmost sadness and shock the news of the attack during the weekend against innocent civilians in the locality of Burayu, near Addis Ababa, in the course of which a number of people were killed and many others wounded and displaced.
Addis Ababa, 9 July 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the Joint Declaration signed by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed following the latter’s visit to Asmara on 8 and 9 July 2018. He commends the two leaders for choosing the courageous path of reconciliation, in the interest of their people, the region and Africa as a whole.
Following the conclusion of the 31st AU Summit held in Nouakchott, Mauritania from the 25th of June to 2nd July 2018, the key activities, decisions and declarations of the Summit are provided below.
1. AFRICAN CONTINENTAL FREE TRADE AREA (AfCFTA)
• 49 of the 55 member states of the African Union (AU) have now signed the agreement establishing the AfCFTA. While six countries 6 have ratified the agreement
Addis Ababa, 23 June 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has learned with shock and dismay of the attack that took place today during a rally in Addis Ababa in support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s reform agenda and efforts. He strongly condemns this cowardly attack that cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Addis Ababa, 21 February 2018 - The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is closely following the situation in Ethiopia. He recalls, in this respect, that Ethiopia is not only home to the African Union Headquarters, but also an important member of the Union. As such, Ethiopia plays a key role in promoting regional peace and security, as well as in the pursuit of the continental agenda.
(Nairobi, 13 June 2017): International partners have made financial pledges in support of humanitarian response efforts in the drought-hit Horn of Africa after a visit to Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.
A delegation led by the African Union and the United Nations concluded a five-day visit to the Horn of Africa in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, after visiting drought-affected communities in Ethiopia and Somalia. It included representatives from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the African Development Bank, the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and the World Bank.

On the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the Commission of the African Union (AU) and the ICRC organized an awareness session for staff members of the Commission working in environments that may be exposed to explosive hazards and landmines. The session provided theoretical and practical knowledge on risk awareness and safe behavior in weapon contaminated areas. The session was conducted by the ICRC's weapons contamination adviser for Africa and members of the Ethiopian National Defense Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team.

31 January 2017, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Today, Heads of State from across Africa endorsed the Addis Declaration on Immunization, also known as the Ministerial Declaration on Universal Access to Immunization, a historic and timely pledge to ensure that everyone in Africa – regardless of who they are or where they live – receives the full benefits of immunization. The endorsement was issued during the 28th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

It is a date set aside, to raise awareness on the need for collective action, to condemn and to end conflict-related sexual violence – which has been used as a weapon of war – inflicting immense physical and psychological injuries on women and children who continue to bear the brunt of the various conflicts on our continent.
Addis Ababa, 14 June 2016: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, expresses deep concern over reports of border clashes between Ethiopia and Eritrea in the Tsorena border area.
The Chairperson calls on the two countries to exercise utmost restraint and to refrain from any statement and action likely to aggravate the situation and further endanger regional stability.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 594th meeting, held on 27 April 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, received a briefing from Dr. Martin Ihoegian Uhomoibhi, the Joint Special Representative/Joint Chief Mediator (JSR/JCM) and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) on the situation in Darfur and activities of UNAMID, as well as the statements made by the representatives of The Sudan and Ethiopia, in its capacity as Chair of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
