This week, the United States Government is handing over three newly constructed Health Centers to the Amhara Regional Health Bureau. The new health centers were constructed through U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Ethiopia Health Infrastructure Program, which is funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Today, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced nearly $533 million in humanitarian assistance for the people of Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Nigeria, as well as countries in the Lake Chad region, where millions are facing life-threatening food insecurity and malnutrition as a result of ongoing conflict or prolonged drought. While humanitarian aid is truly life-saving, this assistance will not solve these crises, most of which are largely manmade.

Over the past five years, the project improved the nutritional, economic, and food security status of people living with HIV.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, December 27, 2016 – The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development, has completed the printing and delivery of critical scholastic materials for an estimated 2.8 million boys and girls throughout Ethiopia. USAID’s efforts were aimed at protecting vulnerable children’s right to education, following one of the worst droughts in Ethiopia in more than 50 years.

The El Nino has significantly impacted weather patterns in Ethiopia this year, limiting agricultural production, straining livelihoods and exacerbating food insecurity among poor and vulnerable households. The projected levels of need for emergency food aid in Ethiopia has grown from 2.9 million people in early 2015 to 4.5 million people in August to 8.2 million people as of mid-October. This number will likely increase with the next Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) due out in early December.

Last week I accompanied World Food Program (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin to South Sudan to see how the world’s largest humanitarian food agency is addressing one of its most complex and pressing challenges.

As I viewed WFP’s emergency operations, I was again reminded that as much as you try to envision the lives of those millions of displaced and hungry, their reality always defies imagination.
