Dear Friends,

Thank you for making 2016-2017 yet another great year at CPAR.

At CPAR, we are focused on looking towards the future as we work to secure funding, design and implement programs, and continually improve systems. It seems the only time we glance back is in past program evaluations, which are used to strengthen future programs. Because of this, we appreciate this opportunity presented through the Annual Report to reflect on some of the achievements that our donors have made possible.

In September 2015, the 193 countries of the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Development Agenda, replacing the previous Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This ambitious agenda of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is titled Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The previous MDGs identified 8 goals for reducing the number of people who live in extreme poverty, with actions to be taken in developing countries. The new SDGs have shifted development into a shared undertaking that addresses common problems.

Elbind Woanze, 25, lives with her husband and six children in Gessess Kebele in Dibate district. Elbind and her fellow Farmers Field School (FFS) members have long been reliant on physically impure seeds, growing whatever is available nearby. For years, her sesame productivity remained poor because of low seed quality despite her efforts to manage the crop well. Elbind and her crop FFS group members had long experience of sesame production in the area but they were not aware of differences in seed quality.

Nutrition challenges are not only about a lack of food. Malnutrition often arises when there is a gap in knowledge about positive nutrition behaviours – including what to eat, the importance of a balanced diet, and how to prepare foods to retain nutrients. Where CPAR works, diets are typically heavily starch based, limited to one or two food groups and locally available nutritious foods have been overlooked. This is why CPAR integrates nutrition and health education into all of our programming.

W/ro Yejanie Mango (43), a mother of three children, lives in Kido Kebele, Dibate District. Her family’s livelihood is entirely dependent on traditional subsistence farming and for years she struggled to produce enough food.

In the next five minutes....
3 women will lose their lives to complications of pregnancy or childbirth, 60 others will suffer debilitating injuries and infection due to the same causes, and 70 children will die, nearly 30 of them newborn babies. Countless other babies will be stillborn or suffer potentially long-term consequences of being born prematurely. The vast majority of these deaths and disabilities are preventable.

In order to increase crop production and productivity, CPAR-Ethiopia has been distributing various improved seed technologies to the farming communities in Were Jarso district since 2010.

Improved wheat, teff, maize, potato, and chickpeas were the major seed types distributed and demonstrated at field level by Farmer Field School groups. The performance of these seed technologies were found successful and generally demonstrated a yield advantage of more than two folds over the local varieties.

Food security; a situation in which all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active healthy life; is affected by a complexity of factors.

As a Partner in African Livelihoods, you are having a huge impact on the lives of families living in your PAL community!

In previous PAL Reports, you learned about the challenges that rural Ethiopian farmers face in securing an adequate food supply for their households. CPAR-Ethiopia is also working in the Jarso Program area to support HIV & AIDS-affected communities. One of the support initiatives involves the establishment of positive People Living with HIV & AIDS (PLWHA) associations like the New Hope Gohatsion Association.

Working in the remote Dibate woreda ('district') in Benishangul-Gumuz region for close to eight years, CPAR-Ethiopia staff based in Dibate identified the existence of several dimensions of inter and intra-ethnic conflict among various ethnic groups in Dibate. As a problem identified through numerous meetings and consultation with elders, community members and the various groups themselves, many approached CPAR to work with them to develop ways out of the current context.

Moving Beyond Hunger is a new three-year CPAR program (July 2006 - June 2009) that will contribute to the Millennium Development Goal (agreed to by all 191 U.N. member states at the Millennium Summit of 2000) of reducing by half the proportion of people that suffer from hunger.
