In order to support management of the humanitarian response in Ethiopia, sectors have identified a set of response and contextual indicators. The monthly data provided against those indicators by the sectors has been visualized in the following infographics.
These visuals will help understand how the drought response is progressing and identify where issues are developing so that proactive measures can be taken.

The evolving negative impact of IOD has resulted into below-average rainfall and drought situation in Ethiopia. There is significant gaps in drinking water supply to households in the six most affected regions. Water scarcity in lowland areas of Oromia, part of SNNP, Somali and Afar region is critical. Approximately 3.9 million people needs immediate water supply in 195 woredas of the 4 regions.

Currently more than 2.6 million people have been reached through water trucking since January 2017. A maximum of 437 trucks were deployed during the peak period in the third week of April while the need was standing at 762 trucks. As a result of recently improved rains in most of the drought affected areas, the demand for water tucking support has temporarily diminished by at least 40%. However, about 2.7 million people living in 195 woredas mainly in Oromia and Somali regions will need emergency water supply, using water trucking, for a maximum of twenty weeks until the end of 2017.

  • The Agriculture sector started delivering seeds mid-April, in preparation for the Meher planting season, which takes place from June to mid-July. As of end of July, at least 90 per cent of crop seeds and 37 per cent of vegetable seeds had been delivered against the plans.

1 Executive Summary

The WASH Cluster objective during the response to the El-Niño induced flood crisis in Ethiopia is to provide access to safe water and appropriate sanitation facilities, including dissemination of hygiene messages to flood affected communities. This objective will contribute to a measurable improvement in WASH-related morbidity and mortality among the affected population through the efficient, effective and timely implementation of emergency WASH and related early recovery programmes.

This guideline has been prepared by the WASH Cluster and associated partners. It is designed to provide critical information for those planning, implementing and monitoring water trucking operations. This includes Government, especially at Regional, Zonal and Woreda level, NGOs and UN Agencies, including UNICEF. The guideline may also be useful for donors considering how best to support this intervention.
