General

Health:

As of 27 February the Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) Task Force in Juba led by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Health of the Government of Southern Sudan, in collaboration with other partners, reported a total number of 5,178 cases and 97 deaths (case fatality rate 1.87%) from acute watery diarrhoea in Southern Sudan. These cases were reported between 28 January and 27 February 2006.

Food Aid:

WFP provided 64 MT of food to 3,442 returnees in Abyei town during the reporting period.

Bahr El Ghazal

Food Aid:

WFP distributed 155 MT of food to 8,758 beneficaries in Gogrial and Diem Zubair including 3,534 Mabia IDPs in Billi transit camp and 2,002 returnees in Gogrial.

UN agencies and local authorities are discussing the possibility of providing provisions to the Mabia IDPs in Diem Zubeir until their anticipated return to their areas of origin in the current period.

General

Multisector Support for Return and Reintegration:

UNHCR and FAO are about to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding for the Land Management and Sustainable Livelihoods Programme. The programme has been structured in two phases, each lasting a period of six months. The first phase, the "assessment phase," is planned to begin in October 2005. During this period, projects will be designed according to problems and solutions identified by the community.

Bahr El Ghazal

Food Aid:

There was an increase in the number of persons newly displaced by floods from Tonj and Kuajok villages in Wau IDP camps. WFP, with OCHA and HAC, assessed some of the recently displaced persons in Eastern Bank camp. Assessment and registration of these IDPs will continue next week in Marial Ajith camp.

The Chief of Salvation camp in Wau reported the presence of 35 new households. The group reportedly arrived from Mabia via Bazia as the IDPs were unable to reach Raja/Diem Zubier because the road was closed.

Bahr El Ghazal:

Food Aid:

WFP distributed 65 MT of food commodities to 3,680 returnees in Adet, Majakliet and Akoc. WFP also distributed 5 MT to 583 returnees in Deim Zubier during the reporting period.

The 400 persons newly displaced from the villages of Tonj and Kuajok as a result of floods are still settled in Eastern Camp. WFP indicated the need to provide joint assistance, pending a response from UNICEF and other agencies in regard to provision of non-food items.
