1.1. Why local building cultures are important today
All over the world, societies have managed to produce, adapt and develop their habitat according to their needs, interests, aspirations, preferences and abilities, making the best use of locally available materials. Strategies developed take advantage of natural resources to protect against the destructive forces of nature and have always generated rich and varied knowledge at local levels.
CASH FEASIBILITY AND MARKETS
With over 822, 000 people displaced into SNNPR and approximately 189, 000 to Guji Zone, the needs are many and requiring urgent/immediate humanitarian assistance that cutts across all the sectors. Markets are functioning and well - integrated with Addis Ababa market and imported goods from Kenya, Somalia trade routes and through the port of Djibouti.
In order to support management of the humanitarian response in Ethiopia, sectors have identified a set of response and contextual indicators. The monthly data provided against those indicators by the sectors has been visualized in the following infographics. These visuals will help understand how the drought response is progressing and identify where issues are developing so that proactive measures can be taken.
Funding update - Of the 43 MUSD required for the shelter/NFI humanitarian response as per update of the Mid-Year Review, 17.6 MUSD have been mobilized (41%), leaving a gap of 25.4 MUSD.
Funding update - Of the 33.4 MUSD required for the shelter/NFI humanitarian response as set out in the Mid-Year Review of the Humanitarian Requirement Documents, 17.2 MUSD have been mobilized (51.5%), in addition to 1.8 MUSD carried over from 2016.

GLOBAL SHELTER CLUSTER STRATEGY 2013-2017
Developed as an output of the 2012 GSC Meeting, the 2013-2017 Global Shelter Cluster Strategy was approved by the Strategic Advisory Group in early 2013. It has the goal to more effectively meet the sheltering needs of populations affected by humanitarian crises, by strengthening the shelter response of humanitarian actors through leadership, coordination and accountability in the humanitarian shelter sector.
• Hostilities has spread in many locations of Greater Equatoria particularly in Yei, Kajo-Keji, Kapoeta North, Rumbek, Morobo, Mundri West and Maridi County forcing thousands of people to leave their homes and seek protection and humanitarian assistance in neighbouring counties and some are even crossing border to Uganda.

The year 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of the Global Shelter Cluster, the inter-agency coordination mechanism for shelter response. During these ten years, coordination has improved in consistency, shelter responses have grown in scale, and there are more people with experience in shelter programming, but people continue to lose their dwellings and be displaced due to conflict and natural disasters. Global humanitarian shelter needs continue to greatly exceed the capacity and resources to respond.
Since the start of 2017, the cluster has received requests to support 59,522displaced households (53% of HRD 2017 target of 111,637 HH).DTM Round 4 (March-April) revealed a total of 135,352 displacedhouseholds -alreadyexceeding the HRD 2017 target. Of this number, 79,373households reported a specific need for shelter-NFI assistance in the regions ofOromia, Somali, Afar, Gambela,
Tigray, Hareri and Amhara.
Purpose: To identify and share key lessons and recommendations on the role played by the Ethiopia Shelter & NFIs Cluster in the Humanitarian response from 2015 to 2016. Lessons learnt and recommendations will be used for improving and informing future shelter cluster responses, by evaluating the impact and effectiveness of the coordination services.
