Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

Summary:

The regional appeal, throughout its first year, has supported 15 emergency operations, including ten Appeals and five DREFs. The latter were/are aiming at meeting the needs of approximately two million

people in 14 countries, including five countries of focus: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia and South-Sudan. For this 12-month report, these operations were asked to provide a brief overview of their key achievements, successes, challenges and key lessons learned over the past year.

The case studies in this edition reflect the on-going challenges posed by responses to complex emergencies such as Haiti and Pakistan as well as new challenges derived from unprecedented level of population displacement in Africa, Asia and in the Middle East.

There is an increasing awareness that enormous change is on-going in the arid lands. the next ten years will be a period of transition and new opportunities, as families who struggle to make ends meet, continue to try to educate and feed their children and search for jobs in the rural towns. Future aspirations are being shaped by the on-going changes. in the aftermath of the drought and famine of 2011, capturing and understanding these changes was a starting point in efforts to work differently and better.

Appeal history:

• A Preliminary Emergency Appeal was initially launched on 5 August 2011 for CHF 10,978,250 for 6 months to assist 165,000 beneficiaries.

• Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF): CHF 200,000 was initially allocated from the Federation’s DREF to support the National Society to respond.

Programme Summary:

The first six months of 2010 were characterized by two major earthquake events in Haiti and Chile that required a massive response effort, leveraging the full range of the Movement's disaster response resources, as well as its global coordination and technical assistance capacities. The response operations both demonstrated IFRC's capacity to scale up quickly through the deployment of a focused and flexible global surge capacity.
