This appeal seeks CHF 6,060,912 (USD 5,421,209 or EUR 3,673,280) to fund programmes to be implemented in 2008 and 2009.

Current context

The eastern Africa region continues to experience major disasters, which claim many lives, destroy property and erode the already weak livelihoods of the affected communities. Among the disasters that have been experienced in the recent past within this region, the most common are floods, heavy rains and land slides as well as drought. Similarly, epidemics including RVF, cholera, meningitis, avian flu and malaria are frequent across the divide.

La Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge lance une série d'activités de prévention à la méningite dans 14 pays d'Afrique afin de se préparer à ce qui pourrait être l'une des pires épidémies de méningite des dix dernières années. Ces actions répondent à la mise en garde lancée le 9 octobre dernier par l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé.

Les premiers signes d'une épidémie pourraient se manifester dès février-mars 2008.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching meningitis prevention activities in 14 countries in Africa to get ready for what could be one of the worst meningitis epidemics in a decade. The move came as a reaction to the warning given by the World Health Organization on October 9.

The first indications of an epidemic could appear as early as February-March 2008.

Climate change is likely to be aggravating the chronic food shortages in many parts of Eastern Africa. In some countries, at 95% of the people depend on agriculture for their livelihood, most of it without irrigation. Erratic rainfall patterns continue to severely disrupt local food production.

"The drought has affected everyone," says Oscar Murengeratwari, a farmer in Burundi.

More than 650 thousand people have lost their homes and some two hundred their lives in the worst floods in the history of Africa affecting large swathes of land all over Eastern, Central and West Africa - and the rains are set to continue into November.

In East Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia and Kenya were badly hit. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected - Uganda around 90,000, in Kenya around 26,000 and in Ethiopia around 100,000. Thousands more have been displaced. Some have died. In Rwanda 15 people died.

Red Cross Red Crescent disasters statistics show a worrying rise in the number of flood emergencies dealt with by volunteers across the African continent. Action must be taken if we want protect the lives and livelihoods of millions.

Over the past few years, the number of emergencies that National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have responded to has risen steeply.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is launching an emergency appeal for 941,000 Swiss francs (US$ 793,500 / € 571,600) to support the Ethiopian Red Cross Society's response to severe flooding affecting parts of the country.

Overflowing rivers and torrential rains have resulted in massive destruction of crops and food supplies. Many people also lost their livestock. According to UN figures, at least 138,000 people have been hit by the floods across the country.
