Period covered: September - October 2000
A timely donor response has enable the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), supported by the Federation, to mount an operation which has largely met the appeal objectives. The cash for work intervention in South Wollo, in particular, has started well and attracted considerable interest.

The context

23 Aug 2000 description

With adequate and timely donor support, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and International Federation drought relief and assistance operation continues to be effectively implemented. Distributions in South Wollo are being carried out efficiently, and a second distribution is soon to take place in North Borena. A recent survey carried out recently by the ERCS and Federation has served to underline the poor nutritional status in both locations, and the continued need for more effective targeting of food aid.

The Federation has been mainly involved in supporting the ERCS in running the disaster response programme in South Wollo and North Borena. Focus on the emergency programme has reduced the efforts in the Appeal priority areas. Nevertheless, the Federation has supported the capacity building of the National Society particularly in the areas of financial and reporting systems. Strengthening of disaster preparedness capacity has also been a priority and further training in this area will be provided over the next few months

A Red Cross assessment team in the district of Baabilee in East Hararghe encountered the family as it trekked slowly homewards along a dusty path.

It takes two hours for Khalima Ahmed to walk across the parched landscape to the nearest water point. A thirty-five year-old widow with six children, she comes to the village of Derer Arba everyday to collect as much water as she can carry - about 15 litres. The journey to Derer Arba into which water is tankered on a daily basis, is bad enough. The journey home with a heavy load and no-one to help, is backbreaking. But she has no choice. The wells, springs and ponds dried up a long time ago.
