Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

Red Cross society of China, Hennan Province

After only two years of implementation of Intensified Capacity Building (ICB) in Hennan Province, the branch has recorded impressive achievements:

• The new structure benefitted 7,000 people through sustainable services

• Grassroots Red Cross organisations have increased from 90 to 3,100

• The number of volunteers increased from 10,000 to 30,000, and staff from 100 to 8,000

Investing in long-term food security projects in Africa is key to fight some of the root causes of hunger and malnutrition, says the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as it launches a new five-year strategy to scale up food security programmes in 15 African countries. The new plan, announced today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will be financed through an appeal for 45 million Swiss francs (US$ 43.5 million / € 28.5 million) over the next five years.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies announced today a new partnership with the London-based charitable Foundation, World Swim for Malaria (WSM). Together they plan to provide life-saving long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) to families in 17 communities in nine East and Southern Africa countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda.
